PepsiCo Trades Near 52-Week Low: Should You Buy Now or Wait?

PepsiCo Inc. PEP has witnessed a volatile stock performance in recent months, weighed down by persistent top-line softness, continued challenges across its North American operations and cautious investor sentiment. Concerns surrounding the company’s near-term growth prospects, compounded by a subdued third-quarter 2026 earnings update, have further dampened market confidence. Reflecting these pressures, shares of the Purchase, NY-based global food and beverage giant touched a fresh 52-week low of $123.47 on Oct. 7, 2026, underscoring investor concerns about its recovery trajectory.

Currently trading at $126.68, the stock rebounded 2.6% from its 52-week low. However, the stock is 26.1% below its 52-week high of $171.48.

The PepsiCo stock has declined 11.7% year to date, underperforming the broader industry’s 12.3% growth and the Consumer Staples sector’s 6.4% rise. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 has rallied 13.9% in the same period.

PEP’s performance is notably weaker than that of its competitors, The Coca-Cola Company KO, Monster Beverage Corporation MNST and Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. KDP. Notably, Coca-Cola, Monster Beverage and Keurig have gained 28.6%, 14.1% and 16.9%, respectively, in the year-to-date period.

PepsiCo is trading below its 50 and 200-day moving averages, indicating a bearish outlook and challenges in sustaining the recent performance levels.

Headwinds Weighing on PEP’s Performance

PepsiCo continues to face operational challenges, particularly in North America, where sluggish organic sales and profitability pressures are weighing on its overall performance. Despite sequential improvements, PepsiCo Foods North America reported a slight decline in organic revenues in third-quarter 2026, reflecting subdued performance across certain food categories and Canada.

Meanwhile, PepsiCo Beverages North America also witnessed a modest organic revenue decline, as lower organic volumes offset the benefits of effective pricing. The company’s carbonated soft drinks portfolio continued to underperform the broader category, highlighting competitive challenges.

Margin pressures remain another concern. PepsiCo’s core operating margin contracted 35 basis points (bps) in the third quarter, reflecting operating cost inflation, and increased advertising and marketing investments. Notably, the core operating margin declined 280 bps in Foods North America and 15 basis points in Beverages North America. Affordability initiatives, unfavorable volume and channel mix, and elevated brand investments continue to constrain profitability.

Management acknowledged that improving North American performance is taking longer than anticipated, with margin pressures expected to persist into the fourth quarter. Consequently, PepsiCo lowered its 2026 core constant-currency EPS growth outlook to 1-2% from the previously projected low end of 4-6%. These challenges could limit near-term earnings momentum despite encouraging international growth and ongoing productivity initiatives.

PepsiCo’s Estimate Revision Trend

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for PEP’s 2026 and 2027 EPS moved down 0.9% and 2%, respectively, in the last seven days. The downward revision in earnings estimates indicates that analysts have been losing faith in the company’s growth potential.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for PEP’s 2026 and 2027 EPS suggests year-over-year growth of 4.2% and 3.3%, respectively.

PEP’s Discounted Valuation

PepsiCo is currently trading at a forward 12-month P/E multiple of 14.6X, exceeding the industry average of 18.99X and the S&P 500’s average of 19.85X.

At 14.6X P/E, PEP, which is a leading name in the Beverages – Soft Drinks industry, is trading at a valuation much lower than its competitors. Its competitors, such as Coca-Cola and Monster Beverage, are delivering solid growth and trade at higher multiples of 25.84X and 35.6X, respectively. Keurig has a forward 12-month P/E ratio of 13.23X.

Although PEP’s stock valuation is currently lower than that of its industry peers, this gap may not be as advantageous as it appears to be. The lower price can signal underlying issues rather than presenting a straightforward investment opportunity.

Is PEP Still Worth a Shot?

PepsiCo’s recent slide to a fresh 52-week low and disappointing year-to-date performance underscore growing investor concerns about its weakening fundamentals and subdued growth prospects. Persistent softness across its North American businesses, declining organic sales, margin pressures and a cautious earnings outlook continue to weigh on the stock’s performance. Management’s reduced profit expectations and slower-than-anticipated operational recovery cloud the near-term outlook. Adding to these concerns, downward revisions in earnings estimates suggest weakening analyst confidence and limited visibility into a meaningful earnings rebound.

Although PEP’s discounted valuation relative to industry peers may appear attractive to value-oriented investors, the lower multiple also reflects underlying operational challenges and uncertainty surrounding its recovery. While PepsiCo’s established brands, international strength and productivity initiatives offer some support, these positives may not be sufficient to offset current headwinds. Investors may therefore prefer to remain cautious and await clearer signs of improving fundamentals and earnings momentum before considering fresh positions. The company currently has a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
