Can Nokia's Latest Portfolio Move Strengthen Its AI Networking Focus?

Nokia Corporation NOK is taking another step toward sharpening its business focus as demand for AI infrastructure creates new opportunities in networking. The company announced that it signed a definitive agreement for the proposed acquisition of its ECE business by AURELIUS. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

ECE serves nearly 900 customers globally across industries such as manufacturing, mining, logistics, airports, ports and power generation. Its portfolio includes private wireless networks, industrial devices, on-premises operational technology edge solutions and software supporting industrial AI applications.

The planned divestiture is intended to give ECE greater independence and flexibility under its new ownership. For Nokia, the transaction aligns with its broader effort to concentrate capital and resources on businesses that offer attractive growth opportunities and differentiated technology.

AI infrastructure remains a key opportunity for Nokia, particularly within its Network Infrastructure business. During the second quarter of 2026, AI and Cloud revenue more than doubled year over year, while order intake reached €2.8 billion. Management expects approximately half of these long-term orders to convert into revenue over the following 12 months.

However, restructuring expenses, uneven cash flow and variations in customer spending could limit the pace of improvement in reported earnings. The benefits of portfolio optimization will also depend on disciplined capital allocation and sustained demand for Nokia's core networking products.

Ericsson ERIC is well positioned to benefit from the market momentum with its competitive 5G product suite. The company boasts a comprehensive portfolio of 60,000 granted patents. A highly skilled team makes this possible, while close collaboration with customers ensures quick uptake, driving sustainable growth. About 50% of 5G traffic outside China runs on Ericsson networks. Several smartphone makers such as Apple, Oppo and Huawei are Ericsson’s licensees.

Ubiquiti Inc. (UI), along with its subsidiaries, offers networking products and solutions for service providers, enterprises and consumers. Its community-driven operating structure and global distribution model continue to support scalable growth across networking markets. The company sells through more than 100 distributors, online retailers and its webstores without a traditional direct sales force.

Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI) is a leading communications equipment manufacturer and has strong market positions in the mission-critical communications vertical. Motorola continues to extend its mission-critical communications platform through AI-enabled software, command center applications and video security solutions. Second-quarter 2026 revenues increased 13% year over year to $3.13 billion, with growth across both segments and all three technologies. In September 2026, Louisiana awarded Motorola a $139 million, 10-year contract spanning body cameras, in-car video, digital evidence management, command center technology and land mobile radio (LMR) network upgrades across six state agencies.
