- Interest income increased 5.3% to $84.3 million, supported by a 4.8% increase in average portfolio balance; portfolio yield edged up to 11.3% from 11.2%.
- Higher funding costs compressed the spread: the average securitization debt rate rose to 6.0% from 4.6%, while average interest-bearing liability cost increased to 6.4% from 5.1%.
- Contract purchases were $346.3 million, down from $415.2 million, while the managed portfolio excluding third-party receivables grew to $3.02 billion from $2.88 billion.
- Annualized net charge-offs increased to 7.8% from 5.2%. Portfolio delinquencies were 10.0% of servicing portfolio at March 31, versus 8.3% a year earlier; delinquencies plus repossessions were 12.4%, versus 9.9%.

Outlook, risks and notable items
The filing provides no quantified earnings or purchase-volume guidance. Management says contract purchasing must be matched to available capital and that liquidity depends in part on portfolio performance, cash releases from securitization trusts, and financing terms. It cautions that internally generated cash may not meet all needs and that debt service could be impaired if operating cash flow and earnings are insufficient.
- Funding: The $200 million Citibank warehouse facility’s revolving period runs to July 2024; the $200 million Ares facility was renewed through March 2026. Rising financing costs, access to securitizations, collateral eligibility, and trust cash-release requirements are key liquidity risks.
- Credit and valuation: CPS identifies economic conditions, unemployment, interest rates, used-car values, and borrower payment performance as risks. Fair-value receivables are Level 3 and rely on significant unobservable assumptions, including discount rates and cumulative net losses. The quarter included a net $5.0 million mark-up; management recorded no overall portfolio markdown.
- Legal contingencies: Probable incurred legal losses were estimated at $3.6 million, with reasonably possible losses not exceeding $5.6 million. A Connecticut class-certification motion was filed in April 2024 and remained unresolved. A California wage-and-hour settlement for $1.1 million had preliminary but not final court approval. CPS paid $1.24 million plus $75,000 trustee costs after quarter-end under a Massachusetts settlement.
- Subsequent financing: On April 23, 2024, CPS completed a $319.9 million securitization backed by $337.2 million of receivables; its notes had a weighted-average yield of approximately 6.69%.
- Other: CPS repurchased 101,355 shares in Q1 for $0.9 million. Management concluded disclosure controls were effective and reported no material quarterly change in internal control over financial reporting.
Most important facts for investors to verify
- Whether the higher delinquency and net charge-off rates persist, and how they affect future collections, trust cash releases, and credit enhancement.
- Whether portfolio yields can keep pace with funding costs and operating expenses, given the decline in net interest yield and earnings.
- Available warehouse capacity in practice, including eligible collateral, the July 2024 Citibank revolving-period end, and refinancing or securitization access.
- The assumptions supporting Level 3 fair values and the $5.0 million mark-up, including loss forecasts and discount rates.
- Final outcomes and costs of the Connecticut, California, and Massachusetts legal matters.
