Quarterly gross margin decreased from the prior-year quarter, which the company said had atypically low service costs and unusually high margin; nine-month margin improved year over year.
For the nine months, operating cash flow improved substantially. Management attributed cash generation primarily to improving operating income excluding stock compensation and depreciation and amortization. The cash-flow statement also reports increases in deferred revenue and accounts payable. Investing cash outflow was $1.878 million, mainly for laboratory equipment and software development; financing cash inflow was $191,000, primarily from option exercises.
Balance sheet and liquidity
- At January 31, 2022, cash was $8.701 million, current assets $17.825 million and current liabilities $15.499 million, implying working capital of approximately $2.326 million. Cash was $4.687 million at April 30, 2021.
- Total assets were $33.584 million; total liabilities were $24.348 million; stockholders’ equity was $9.236 million. Accumulated deficit was $71.638 million.
- The filing reports no off-balance-sheet debt or similar obligations. It shows operating lease liabilities of $9.632 million ($1.014 million current and $8.618 million non-current), with future minimum lease payments totaling $19.997 million. Management did not report conventional borrowings in the presented balance sheet.
- Management believes cash on hand and expected positive operating cash flow for fiscal 2022 are sufficient to fund operations for at least 12 months from filing. If revenue expectations do not materialize, it says cost reductions could be implemented; additional financing, if needed, may not be available on acceptable terms.
Material changes, outlook and risks
- Revenue growth reflected continued demand for core services and expansion of platforms and products, increasing both the number and size of studies. Pharmacology services generated $34.468 million of nine-month revenue; Other TOS revenue increased to $1.715 million from $122,000.
- Nine-month research and development expense rose 32.4% to $6.783 million, mainly from compensation and sequencing costs for therapeutic target discovery. General and administrative expense rose 35.6% to $6.356 million, driven mainly by compensation and IT infrastructure. Sales and marketing expense increased 17.7% to $4.764 million, including added business-development capacity.
- The enhanced Lumin platform was launched in the quarter. The company placed $1.4 million of enhanced-platform development costs into service; total capitalized Lumin investment was $1.9 million at period end.
- One customer represented 11% of quarterly revenue and 14% of nine-month revenue, compared with 10% in each prior-year comparable period.
- Management identified a material weakness in internal control over financial reporting related to identifying and reviewing third-party royalty obligations and recognizing associated liabilities. It said enhanced processes and controls had been implemented, while concluding the financial statements were fairly presented. Disclosure controls and procedures were deemed ineffective as of January 31, 2022.
- No legal proceedings were reported. The company had $181,000 of liabilities for uncertain tax positions related to a foreign operation and reported no accrued liquidated damages under its registration-rights arrangement. Royalty arrangements can require payments of 2%–20% of contract price in specified circumstances; $286,000 was paid or accrued for the nine months ended January 31, 2022.
- No specific revenue, earnings or margin guidance was provided. Forward-looking statements are subject to risks, and management cautioned that interim results are not necessarily indicative of full-year results.
