Automotive sales rose 17% to $537.4 million. Auto-dimming mirror shipments increased 16% to 12.7 million units, including a 20% increase in exterior mirror shipments. Other-segment sales increased to $13.3 million from $10.3 million. Higher sales and operating profit supported net income growth, while gross margin was pressured by raw-material costs, annual customer price reductions, product mix and labor costs. Lower freight expense partly offset those headwinds. Investment income also increased year over year.

Balance sheet, liquidity and capital allocation

  • At March 31, cash and cash equivalents were $215.5 million; restricted cash was $4.0 million. Short-term investments were $25.6 million and long-term investments were $229.4 million.
  • Working capital was $708.0 million. Current assets were $1.005 billion and current liabilities were $297.0 million.
  • No borrowings were outstanding under the revolving credit facility. A new $250 million unsecured revolver, maturing February 2026, replaced the prior $150 million facility; the company reported compliance with its covenants.
  • Operating cash flow was $120.9 million; investing activities used $72.4 million and financing activities used $47.8 million. Cash and cash equivalents increased $0.7 million from year-end.
  • Gentex repurchased 1.05 million shares for approximately $25.7 million in cash and declared a $0.12-per-share dividend. About 19.7 million shares remained authorized for repurchase at quarter-end.
  • The company invested $21.5 million for a 15% stake in Adasky, a thermal-sensing technology developer. Total technology investments were approximately $86.9 million.

Outlook, management commentary and risks

  • Management maintained 2023 guidance: revenue of approximately $2.2 billion; gross margin of 32%–33%; operating expenses of $260–$270 million; tax rate of 15%–17%; capital expenditures of $200–$225 million; and depreciation and amortization of $100–$110 million.
  • Gentex continued to expect 2024 revenue growth of approximately 10% over its 2023 revenue guidance, while emphasizing that forecasting remains difficult.
  • Three construction projects were underway: a 350,000-square-foot manufacturing facility estimated at $80–$90 million, a 300,000-square-foot distribution-center expansion estimated at $40–$45 million, and a 60,000-square-foot manufacturing expansion estimated at $20–$30 million. The new facility was expected to be operational in Q4 2023. The projects were expected to be funded from cash on hand.
  • Management cited uncertainty in vehicle production and customer orders, electronics and other supply constraints, labor availability, inflation and pricing pressure, tariffs, geopolitical events, and possible customer or supplier disruptions. Competition and potential shifts toward camera-based vision systems are also relevant risks.
  • The company reported no material pending legal proceedings expected to materially adversely affect its financial position or results, and no significant unrecorded off-balance-sheet arrangements. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective; no material changes to internal control over financial reporting were reported.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether revenue growth and mirror shipment gains continue, and how vehicle production forecasts compare with actual customer demand.
  • Whether gross margin recovers from Q1’s 31.7%, given raw-material, pricing, mix and labor pressures and the stated full-year margin guidance.
  • Progress, spending and timing for the facility projects, including the $200–$225 million full-year capital-expenditure outlook.
  • Whether working-capital movements, particularly receivables, affect cash conversion; Q1 receivables rose by $56.4 million from year-end, primarily due to sales timing.
  • Performance and valuation developments in technology investments, including the Adasky investment, and any changes in unrealized investment losses.
  • Developments in supply-chain availability, tariffs, customer pricing, regulatory approval of camera-monitoring systems, and other risks identified by management.
