Device revenue rose 10.0% to $6.11 million, led by MRI-compatible IV infusion pumps (+31.5%); patient vital signs monitoring systems declined 9.9%. Management attributed higher gross margin primarily to favorable geographic sales mix, partly offset by unfavorable overhead variances. Operating expenses fell to $5.29 million from $5.73 million, principally due to lower general and administrative costs.
Net income was lower despite higher pretax income, largely reflecting the comparison with Q1 2020’s $0.93 million income tax benefit. Q1 2021 included $0.38 million of tax expense; Q1 2020’s unusually favorable tax result included stock-compensation and state tax benefits and a CARES Act NOL carryback benefit.

COVID-19 may continue to affect MRI procedure volumes, customer payment timing, demand, staffing, manufacturing, distribution and supply chains; the future impact remained uncertain. Management said known legal matters were not expected to have a material effect. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective, with no material change in internal control reported.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether U.S. growth can continue and international sales recover, particularly given the differing trends across product lines.
- Whether COVID-19, hospital procedure volumes, and supply-chain conditions materially affect demand or cash conversion.
- Whether the improved gross and operating margins are sustainable and how earnings compare after the prior-year tax benefit normalizes.
- Regulatory status, sole-source component continuity, and any new legal, product, or compliance developments.
- Terms and governance oversight of the related-party facility lease, and any changes in liquidity, commitments, or capital needs.
