Material changes versus the prior period
- Pump-system revenue rose 23.9% to $7.30 million; the company recognized revenue on 263 pump systems versus 217, and reported average selling prices of approximately $28,000 versus $27,000.
- Disposable IV sets and services revenue increased 51.1% to $1.67 million. U.S. revenue rose 25.0% to $7.87 million and international revenue rose 57.1% to $1.09 million.
- Gross margin remained at 81.0%. Operating margin improved as operating expenses declined to 42.1% of revenue from 48.6%; net margin increased to 25.5% from 21.3%.
- General and administrative and sales and marketing expenses increased, mainly reflecting payroll, benefits and a larger sales organization. R&D expense decreased, partly because certain patient-monitor development costs were capitalized.
- Cash and cash equivalents fell by $3.86 million during the quarter, primarily reflecting the share repurchase program. The company repurchased 314,952 shares for $5.51 million under a $10 million authorization through January 28, 2017.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management expected continued 2016 revenue growth, supported by U.S. sales-force expansion and efforts to reach additional hospital departments. It expected to launch an MRI-compatible patient vital signs monitor in the second half of 2016 and anticipated higher 2016 operating expenses from headcount, product launch costs and depreciation. No specific full-year revenue or earnings guidance was provided.
- FDA risk: On March 24, 2016, the FDA denied the company’s 510(k) submission for the MRidium 3860+ with DERS, citing human-factors testing in which two of 56 participants unintentionally bypassed DERS hard dose limits. The company appealed on April 7 and met with the FDA on May 2; the appeal outcome was pending when the filing was signed. The FDA Warning Letter remains unresolved. Distribution had resumed under FDA enforcement discretion, but the filing warns of possible restrictions, recalls or other enforcement actions.
- The business is highly dependent on MRidium pump systems and related disposables. Other key risks include single-source suppliers, manufacturing at one Florida facility, medical-device regulation, product safety and liability, and reliance on GPO and distributor relationships.
- The manufacturing and headquarters facility is leased from an entity controlled by CEO Roger Susi; the related-party lease has monthly base rent of $32,616, subject to annual CPI adjustment.
- The company disclosed a prior shareholder class action related to FDA compliance; the complaint was dismissed and the appeal was dismissed with prejudice in October 2015. Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Current FDA status of the Warning Letter, the appeal and any resubmission or clearance path for the DERS-enabled pump.
- Whether pump sales growth, U.S. backlog conversion and international growth continue, and how product mix affects margins.
- Progress, regulatory status and costs of the planned patient vital signs monitor launch.
- Cash generation and liquidity after share repurchases, capitalized development spending and planned operating-expense increases.
- Exposure to the single-source ultrasonic motor supplier, the single manufacturing facility and the related-party facility lease.
