Cash and cash equivalents ended the quarter at $237.2, up $106.7 during the quarter. Higher noninterest income—particularly mortgage banking, treasury management, swap fees, bank-owned life insurance and private-equity investment revenue—more than offset lower net interest income, increased credit provision and higher expenses. The filing does not present a conventional operating margin measure.
Financial position, funding and credit
- Total assets were $5.47 billion, up $112.7 from year-end; loans were $4.32 billion, up $18.2 (0.4%). Commercial loans were $3.43 billion. Multifamily and residential rental loans grew $34.4, while commercial and industrial loans declined $31.9.
- Deposits increased $106.9 (2.7%) to $4.01 billion. Money-market balances rose $180.4 and time deposits increased; noninterest-bearing deposits fell $112.6. Estimated uninsured deposits were approximately $1.9 billion, or 47% of deposits.
- Interest-bearing deposits averaged $2.79 billion and cost 3.19%, versus 1.47% a year earlier. The overall cost of funds rose to 2.32% from 1.07%, outpacing the increase in earning-asset yield to 6.06% from 5.35% and compressing the margin.
- Borrowings included $228.6 of repurchase agreements, $447.1 of Federal Home Loan Bank advances, $49.8 of subordinated debentures and $89.1 of subordinated notes. FHLB collateral-based remaining borrowing availability was $464; unsecured correspondent lines totaled $70 and were unused.
- The allowance for credit losses was $51.6, or 1.19% of loans and 855% of nonaccrual loans. Nonperforming loans were $6.0 (0.14% of loans), compared with $3.4 at year-end. Q1 gross charge-offs were less than $0.1; recoveries were $0.4.
- Shareholders’ equity was $536.6. The bank’s total risk-based capital ratio was 13.8%, above the 10.0% well-capitalized threshold; management reported the bank remained well capitalized.
Changes, outlook and notable items
- Management attributed the lower net interest income and margin to funding costs rising faster than asset yields as customers shifted toward higher-cost deposits and competition for deposits increased.
- Management described the commercial loan pipeline as strong: $345 of unfunded construction and development commitments were in the construction phase and expected to draw over 12–18 months; approximately $235 of new lending commitments were expected, mostly to be accepted and funded over that period. These are expectations, not guaranteed funding.
- Management expects the securities portfolio generally to remain around 12%–15% of assets. No formal earnings or full-year guidance is provided; the filing cautions that quarterly results are not necessarily indicative of full-year results.
- Available-for-sale securities had a $67.1 net unrealized loss at quarter-end, attributed by management to interest-rate movements; the filing reports no allowance for credit losses on that portfolio. The quarter’s after-tax securities valuation change reduced equity by $2.5.
- The $1.3 credit provision reflected a specific allocation for a nonperforming commercial relationship, loan growth and a commercial-loan qualitative-factor change, partly offset by an improved economic forecast. A $0.7 bank-owned life-insurance death benefit and $0.7 contribution to the Mercantile Bank Foundation were notable Q1 items.
- Interest-rate simulations projected 12-month net interest income changes of +8.4% with rates up 300 basis points and −7.3% with rates down 300 basis points. Results depend on model assumptions and are not forecasts.
- The board declared a $0.35-per-share dividend payable June 19, 2024. No shares were repurchased in Q1; $6.8 remained under the existing repurchase authorization. Management reported no material legal proceedings, no material change in previously disclosed risk factors, and effective disclosure controls.
Investor verification priorities
- Track deposit pricing, noninterest-bearing deposit trends and the effect of funding costs on net interest margin.
- Monitor uninsured-deposit balances, liquidity sources and availability, and the timing and concentration of large deposit or sweep-account movements.
- Review commercial real estate and construction exposure, loan pipeline conversion, loan delinquencies, nonaccruals and provision levels.
- Assess the duration and recovery implications of unrealized securities losses and any effects on capital or liquidity.
- Compare management’s expected commitment drawdowns and new lending with subsequent reported loan growth and funding needs.
