Changes, outlook, and risks
- Management described first-quarter loan growth as robust, led by commercial real estate and consumer lending. Securities sales were used in part to fund loan demand.
- Management attributed margin pressure to low rates, competition, and declining yields on earning assets. Loan yield fell 44 basis points year over year to 4.70%; overall earning-asset yield fell 25 basis points to 4.28%. The reported margin comparison was also affected by lower acquired-loan accretion in 2015.
- Management cited sluggish economic growth and a potentially flat yield curve as pressures on bank margins. Its interest-rate simulation estimated a 2.4% increase in projected 12-month net interest income under an instantaneous 100-basis-point rate increase; management cautioned that models and static gap analysis have limitations.
- Management stated liquidity was adequate. Unused commitments and standby letters of credit totaled $260,105 at March 31. The filing does not provide specific earnings guidance.
- Key risks include interest-rate movements, local economic conditions, borrower credit quality and collateral values, deposit flows, competition, regulation, and realizing expected benefits of the 2013 Penseco merger. Management said there were no material changes to previously disclosed risk factors and no legal proceedings expected to materially affect results, liquidity, or financial position.
- The board reauthorized a 370,000-share repurchase program in January; 368,200 shares remained available at quarter-end. The filing’s monthly purchase table reports no purchases.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether earnings growth excluding the $832 securities gain and the prior-year $608 acquisition expense is sustainable.
- Whether loan growth and lower funding costs can offset pressure on loan yields and reported net interest margin.
- Trends in nonaccrual loans, nonperforming assets, delinquency, restructurings, and allowance adequacy, particularly in commercial lending.
- Whether deposit trends, securities liquidity, commitments, and reduced short-term borrowing continue to support funding needs.
- Regulatory capital ratios and dividend capacity, including the merger-related expectation of a quarterly dividend of at least $0.31 per share through 2018 subject to stated conditions.
