Material changes versus Q1 2010

  • Advisory revenue growth reflected higher average AUM, with gains in both U.S. sponsored funds and other portfolios. Period-end AUM increased 5.8% from December 31, 2010.
  • Operating expenses rose 16.8% to $370.9 million, slower than net revenue growth. Compensation increased 16.9%, partly from variable compensation, higher staffing and salaries; average staff size was up 6.0% year over year.
  • Advertising and promotion expense rose 8.1%. Management expected Q2 2011 spending to be about $2.0 million above Q2 2010 and full-year 2011 spending to increase about 15% from 2010.
  • Investing cash outflow was substantially lower than in Q1 2010, which included $143.6 million for the UTI Asset Management investment. Q1 2011 capital spending was lower following completion of the technology support facility.

Outlook, commentary and risks

  • Management anticipated money-market fee waivers could continue through the remainder of 2011. Estimated full-year 2011 effective tax rate increased to 38.3% from the prior estimate of 37.8%.
  • Full-year 2011 property and equipment expenditures were expected to be about $110 million, funded from cash balances.
  • Management emphasized that results are sensitive to market movements, AUM levels and mix, client flows, investment performance, fee levels, competition, and investor confidence. Expenses may fluctuate with compensation, advertising, technology, staffing and regulatory requirements. Forward-looking statements are not guarantees of future performance.
  • Management said unrealized losses on certain savings-bank debt securities were generally due to interest rates and market liquidity, not credit deterioration, and considered temporary; it intended to hold the securities to maturity. Ordinary-course claims were assessed as unlikely to materially affect financial position or results.
  • Non-operating investment income declined year over year; Q1 2010 included a $2.2 million gain associated with settlement and valuation of currency forward contracts used to hedge the UTI acquisition price. Q1 2011 included $1.7 million of equity earnings from UTI.
  • The interim financial statements received an independent accountant’s review, not an audit. Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter.

  • Whether operating expenses, particularly compensation and planned advertising, remain controlled as revenue and AUM change.
  • Whether money-market fee waivers continue and the 38.3% estimated effective tax rate is realized.
  • How the company funds planned capital expenditures and maintains its cash and investment liquidity without external credit facilities.
  • Updates to investment risks, regulatory matters and ordinary-course claims; the filing reports no material change in previously disclosed risk factors.
