Material changes versus prior periods

  • Personal-care sales increased 53.1% in Q2 and 28.5% in the first half, primarily from greater shipments to Ashland Specialty Ingredients (ASI), the largest marketing partner. Management cited stronger demand in China; sales to Korea also increased, partly offset by declines in parts of Western Europe.
  • Pharmaceutical sales fell 1.7% in Q2 but increased 11.1% for the first half, mainly reflecting higher first-quarter Renacidin sales.
  • First-half operating cash flow improved from $2.485 million to $3.061 million, principally due to higher net income. Investing cash outflow increased to $0.927 million, largely due to purchases of marketable securities. Cash declined by $0.164 million.
  • First-half 2014 included $24,402 from the final payment under a Renacidin supplier damage settlement; there was no settlement income in 2015.

Outlook, risks and other items

  • No formal earnings or revenue guidance was provided. Management expects working capital to support operations for at least 12 months and does not expect significant capital expenditures in the remainder of 2015.
  • The company is working with a new supplier on a single-dose Renacidin container and has submitted an FDA application supplement. It hopes to launch in early 2016, subject to FDA approval; delays could change the timing. Management said current-form inventory should be adequate until approval.
  • Sales growth depends in part on ASI and demand in China. Other disclosed risks include competition, product acceptance and development, intellectual-property changes, regulatory requirements, economic conditions and securities-market conditions.
  • Marketable securities totaled $10.254 million and were available-for-sale investments measured using quoted market prices. First-half 2015 other comprehensive income included an after-tax unrealized loss of $28,702.
  • The company reported no legal proceedings or off-balance-sheet arrangements. Management concluded disclosure controls were effective and reported no material changes in internal control over financial reporting.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether ASI-led growth, particularly in China, is sustained and how customer or partner concentration affects sales.
  • FDA review timing, supplier readiness and the availability of Renacidin inventory.
  • How much of reported investment income reflects recurring dividends versus realized or unrealized investment gains and losses.
  • Whether strong receivables growth and the increase in accrued expenses and taxes payable affect subsequent cash conversion.
  • Dividend sustainability relative to operating cash generation and future business needs.
