Outlook, management commentary and risks
Management described 2014 as challenging amid slower regional growth, falling commodity and oil prices, and heightened market volatility, while citing stronger earnings, portfolio growth, fee generation and efficiency. No numerical earnings or return guidance is provided. For 2015 and later, the Bank’s stated priorities include growing in stable, high-growth markets; broadening its client base; developing sector-specific solutions; and expanding products such as factoring, vendor finance, leasing and structured trade finance.
- Credit and geographic concentration are material: 66% of the credit portfolio was concentrated in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Panama; Brazil represented 27% of the portfolio. The Bank also identifies borrower, industry and regional economic risks.
- Funding and liquidity depend on continued access to wholesale markets and deposits. Five depositors, all regional central banks, represented 51% of deposits; 36% of funding was short-term borrowings and debt from international private banks. Panama has no central bank lender of last resort.
- Other principal risks include changing interest rates and funding spreads, currency and commodity shocks, competition, credit-loss estimate uncertainty, operational and information-system failures, compliance and documentary-fraud exposure, and evolving banking regulation. Management notes potential effects from Basel III, U.S. Dodd-Frank requirements and FATCA.
- Off-balance-sheet credit exposures were $386.1 million at year-end, down from $480.4 million; the related reserve was $6.8 million. The Bank reported compliance with financing covenants and regulatory lending limits and disclosed no material litigation.
- Credit ratings from Fitch, Moody’s and S&P were investment grade with stable outlooks. The Miami administrative office ceased operations in the first quarter of 2015.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Reconcile the reported $106.9 million attributable earnings with consolidated net income of $106.5 million, including the impact of the investment-fund deconsolidation and noncontrolling interest.
- Review the loan-loss methodology and adequacy of the $86.5 million total credit-loss reserve against portfolio growth, regional concentration and the increase in provisions.
- Assess liquidity and refinancing exposure alongside the decline in liquid assets, deposit concentration, short-term funding dependence, and the contractual maturity schedule.
- Evaluate whether 2014 earnings growth is sustainable given the contribution from investment-fund gains, loan-sale gains and lower funding costs; the filing gives no quantified forward guidance.
- Confirm the status and performance of the remaining investment-fund commitments through March 31, 2016, and the financial and operational effects of the Miami office closure.
