Operating expenses included $77.9 million of cost of revenue, $95.1 million of product development, $107.4 million of sales, marketing and customer support, and $78.7 million of general and administrative expense. Stock-based compensation increased to $42.3 million from $21.9 million. The GAAP effective tax rate was 27.1%, compared with a tax benefit in 2021, contributing to the year-over-year change in reported earnings.
Liquidity, debt and cash flow
- Year-end cash and cash equivalents were $267.8 million, versus $221.6 million a year earlier. Net working capital, defined by the company as current assets excluding cash less current liabilities, was $108.4 million, versus $89.2 million.
- Operating cash flow was $94.9 million; investing cash outflow was $40.0 million, principally property, equipment and capitalized software; financing cash outflow was $7.9 million.
- No debt was outstanding at year-end. The company had $150 million available under its revolving credit facility, which matures in October 2025 and is secured by substantially all assets of the credit group, subject to exceptions.
- Trade receivables rose to $167.1 million from $122.9 million. Days sales outstanding increased to 113 from 105; days payable outstanding fell to 54 from 64.
Material changes, outlook and notable items
- Revenue and operating income grew substantially, while Adjusted EBITDA margin declined as operating costs grew. Product development expense increased 52%, partly from personnel and engineering investment.
- Fourth-quarter 2022 revenue was $133.6 million, compared with $105.5 million in fourth-quarter 2021. Quarterly net income was $18.1 million versus $28.3 million; the prior-year quarter included a substantial income tax benefit.
- Management expects 2023 capital expenditures, including capitalized software, of approximately $15 million to $25 million and lease payments of approximately $10 million. It states available cash, operating cash generation and undrawn credit capacity are expected to cover working capital and capital expenditure needs; no specific revenue or earnings guidance is provided.
- Management’s strategy emphasizes existing-customer expansion, new products and channels, international growth, and opportunistic acquisitions. It cites digital ad spend, social and programmatic adoption, and connected TV as opportunities, but cautions that advertising budgets and market conditions are uncertain.
- The company discontinued relationships with Russia-based customers in 2022; it says the business impact was not material, but recorded a $1.0 million increase in bad-debt reserves related to Russia and the Ukraine conflict. A $1.5 million impairment of an operating lease right-of-use asset and a $1.4 million loss on disposal of fixed assets were also recorded. The Zentrick deferred-payment arrangement was terminated, with a $5.6 million payment in February 2022.
- Key risks include economic weakness reducing advertising spend; reliance on major ad, social and programmatic platform integrations; evolving privacy laws and cross-border data-transfer rules; cybersecurity or service interruptions; competition and product accuracy; and acquisition integration. Two programmatic platforms collected approximately 17% and 14% of revenue each on behalf of advertisers, despite no individual customer exceeding 10% of revenue.
- No material pending legal proceeding was reported. Management and the auditor concluded internal control over financial reporting was effective at year-end; the auditor issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Assess whether strong revenue growth can continue and whether margins can stabilize as investment and stock-based compensation rise.
- Review receivables, collection timing, bad-debt reserves and partner concentration, including the two platforms that collect significant portions of revenue.
- Confirm the status and availability of the $150 million revolving facility, its covenants and secured-asset terms, and the company’s substantial lease commitments.
- Monitor privacy and data-transfer developments, platform integration access, and demand trends in social, programmatic and connected-TV advertising.
- Evaluate the non-GAAP Adjusted EBITDA reconciliation and adjustments; the filing notes this measure excludes costs and cash requirements that GAAP results reflect.
