Material changes versus prior year
- Sales declined 2%, while net income rose 36%. Improved profit reflected lower advertising, freight and natural-gas costs, as well as a lower effective tax rate (19.8% versus 26.3%).
- Retail and Wholesale sales fell 2% to $169.1 million: branded cat litter sales declined about 11%, partly offset by private-label litter growth of about 10% and higher industrial absorbent sales. Segment operating income increased 46% to $5.2 million.
- Business to Business sales fell 2% to $92.3 million, mainly due to lower fluids-purification and co-packaged coarse-litter sales. Animal-health and nutrition sales rose about 18%, and agricultural and horticultural sales rose about 12%. Segment operating income increased 10% to $29.4 million.
- Gross margin improved as natural-gas costs fell approximately 26% and freight costs declined; higher non-fuel manufacturing costs and packaging costs for the full year partly offset the savings.
- Inventory decreased $3.1 million, and debt declined. Q4 net income was $5.1 million versus $0.5 million in the prior-year quarter; Q4 sales were $65.5 million versus $66.0 million.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management provided no quantified earnings or revenue guidance. It said new branded and private-label lightweight scoopable litter products introduced in the second half of FY2015 are intended to position the company in a growing market segment.
- Management expected cash from operations, available credit, cash and investments, and potential financing to meet foreseeable needs for at least 12 months. Planned capital needs include plant investment, working capital, dividends and debt service.
- Key risks include intense cat-litter competition and pricing pressure, dependence on major customers (Walmart represented 18% of sales and 27% of year-end receivables), energy and freight cost volatility, foreign-exchange exposure, mining and environmental regulation, and the need for successful new-product introductions. Foreign subsidiaries recorded a $1.3 million net loss; foreign-currency effects also weighed on results.
- Fluids-purification sales and volume fell about 10%, reflecting seed and bean crop characteristics and the stronger U.S. dollar. The China animal-health subsidiary was in its first full year of operations and contributed to higher foreign-subsidiary losses.
- The filing reports routine legal proceedings that management did not expect to materially harm the business or financial condition. No material off-balance-sheet arrangements or subsequent events requiring disclosure were reported. The independent auditor gave unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether private-label and lightweight scoopable litter growth can offset continued weakness in branded and coarse litter, and whether the new products sustain margins.
- Whether lower fuel and freight costs persist; the company reported buying no natural-gas contracts for FY2016 planned kiln needs and continued spot-rate purchasing.
- Customer concentration, particularly Walmart’s sales and receivables exposure, and the terms and continuity of key supply arrangements.
- The pace of China subsidiary growth and the path to reducing foreign-subsidiary losses, including exposure to currency movements.
- Debt maturities and covenant restrictions, pension funding assumptions, and the adequacy of environmental reclamation estimates and permits.
