Interest income increased 16.7% to $381.9 million, primarily from higher loan balances and yields. Interest expense increased 71.4% to $143.7 million, driven by higher deposit costs and other borrowings. Noninterest income was $38.9 million, up 1.6%, while noninterest expense increased 10.4% to $135.8 million. The effective tax rate was 21.8% versus 21.4% in Q1 2023.

Net cash provided by operating activities was $187.4 million. Investing activities provided $405.3 million, primarily reflecting securities maturities, sales and paydowns, partially offset by loan growth and Warehouse Purchase Program originations. Financing activities provided $35.5 million. Cash and cash equivalents increased $628.3 million during the quarter.

The allowance for credit losses on loans was $330.2 million, or 1.55% of total loans, compared with $332.4 million, or 1.57%, at year-end 2023. There was no provision for credit losses in either comparative quarter. Net charge-offs were $2.1 million, compared with net recoveries of $615 thousand in Q1 2023.

Material changes versus prior comparable periods

  • Net income declined 11.4% and diluted EPS declined 13.9%, primarily because of lower net interest income and higher operating expenses.
  • Net interest income decreased 2.1%; the tax-equivalent net interest margin fell 14 basis points to 2.79%. Higher loan yields and balances were more than offset by increased deposit and borrowing costs and lower average securities balances.
  • Average interest-bearing liabilities increased 6.1%, while their average rate rose to 2.62% from 1.63%.
  • Noninterest expense increased $12.8 million, principally from higher salaries and benefits, data processing and software costs, and expenses associated with the First Bancshares merger.
  • Loans increased 0.4% from year-end, including Warehouse Purchase Program loans of $864.9 million. Deposits were essentially unchanged, but noninterest-bearing deposits declined $250.0 million while interest-bearing deposits increased $245.7 million.
  • Nonperforming assets increased to $83.8 million, or 0.39% of loans and other real estate, from $72.7 million, or 0.34%, at December 31, 2023. Nonaccrual loans increased to $78.5 million from $68.7 million.
  • Investment securities declined 3.9% to $12.30 billion. Held-to-maturity securities had gross unrealized losses of $1.51 billion, primarily attributable to interest-rate changes; management stated that it did not expect material credit losses.
  • Shareholders’ equity increased 0.4% to $7.10 billion. The Company repurchased 567,692 shares for $35.3 million at an average price of $62.12 per share and declared cash dividends of $52.4 million, or $0.56 per share.
