Is VeriSign Stock Underperforming the Dow?

VeriSign, Inc. (VRSN), headquartered in Reston, Virginia, provides domain name registry services and internet infrastructure that enables internet navigation for various recognized domain names. Valued at $27.4 billion by market cap, the company enables the security, stability, and resiliency of key internet infrastructure and services, as well as provides root zone maintainer services.

Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally described as “large-cap stocks,” and VRSN perfectly fits that description, with its market cap exceeding this mark, underscoring its size, influence, and dominance within the software infrastructure industry. VeriSign dominates the domain name registry market, managing .com and .net domains. Its robust infrastructure, trusted brand, and operation of two root servers solidify its pivotal role in the internet ecosystem.

Despite its notable strength, VRSN shares slipped 2.2% from their 52-week high of $312.48, achieved on May 22. Over the past three months, VRSN stock has gained 15%, outperforming the Dow Jones Industrials Average’s ($DOWImarginal gains during the same time frame.

In the longer term, shares of VRSN rose 25.3% on a YTD basis, outperforming DOWI’s YTD gains of 7.8%. However, the stock climbed 7.8% over the past 52 weeks, underperforming DOWI’s 11.9% returns over the last year.

To confirm the bullish trend, VRSN has been trading above its 50-day moving average since late July, with slight fluctuations. The stock has been trading above its 200-day moving average since early April, with slight fluctuations.

VRSN’s underperformance stems primarily from growth moderation in its core .com and .net domain registries, where new website creation slowed following post-pandemic highs. This volume deceleration sparked analyst downgrades and valuation multiple compression, as small businesses increasingly rely on third-party digital platforms, like social commerce and direct storefronts over traditional web domains. Additionally, higher spending on IT infrastructure and security initiatives slightly squeezed operating margins. Although VRSN maintains net profit margins above 50% and aggressive share buybacks, investor caution remains tied to its single-service dependency and a lack of immediate catalysts beyond scheduled wholesale price increases.

In the competitive arena of software infrastructure, GoDaddy Inc. (GDDY) has lagged behind VRSN, falling 20.5% on a YTD basis and 31.9% over the past 52 weeks.

Wall Street analysts are bullish on VRSN’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Strong Buy” rating from the five analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $334.25 suggests a potential upside of 9.3% from current price levels.
