Citizens Financial Stock: Is CFG Outperforming the Financial Sector?

Providence, Rhode Island-based Citizens Financial Group, Inc. (CFG) provides retail and commercial banking products and services. Valued at $28.4 billion by market cap, CFG offers consumer and commercial loans, mortgage finance, deposit products, retail and commercial banking, asset management, and trust services.

Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally described as “large-cap stocks,” and CFG perfectly fits that description, with its market cap exceeding this mark, underscoring its size, influence, and dominance within the banks - regional industry. CFG's strength is its multi-channel distribution with about 1,000 branches, nearly 5,000 branch colleagues and ATMs, especially strong in the Northeast, complemented by digital banking. Its investment in technology and omni-channel experiences ensures convenience and positions it as a leader in customer service.

Despite its notable strength, CFG slipped 10.6% from its 52-week high of $75.33, achieved on Aug. 17. Over the past three months, CFG stock gained marginally, underperforming the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF’s (XLF) 4.4% gains during the same time frame.

In the longer term, shares of CFG rose 15.3% on a YTD basis and climbed 25.8% over the past 52 weeks, outperforming XLF’s YTD gains of 2.1% and 3% returns over the last year.

To confirm the bullish trend, CFG has been trading above its 200-day moving average over the past year. However, the stock is trading below its 50-day moving average since late August.

CFG’s outperformance has been driven by accelerating net interest margin (NIM) expansion, strong execution across high-margin fee streams, and strict cost efficiency. The rapid scaling of its Citizens Private Bank unit, capturing billions in new deposits, wealth management assets, and loans has provided a powerful growth engine alongside record capital markets activity. Additionally, structural tailwinds from the roll-off of legacy interest rate swaps, positive operating leverage fueled by its "Reimagine the Bank" efficiency program, and improving credit metrics, marked by reduced commercial real estate exposure, have significantly expanded earnings power and lifted investor sentiment.

CFG’s rival, Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB) has lagged behind the stock, with a 13.9% uptick on a YTD basis and 15.7% gains over the past 52 weeks.

Wall Street analysts are bullish on CFG’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Strong Buy” rating from the 20 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $80.75 suggests a potential upside of 19.9% from current price levels.
