ONDS' $56M Defense Bet: Can 3 Buyouts Build an Autonomous Warfare Stack?

Ondas Inc. ONDS is expanding its position in autonomous defense systems by acquiring three defense technology businesses. Ondas is positioning the acquisitions as building blocks for a broader systems-of-systems strategy, combining sensors, communications, autonomy and mission execution into integrated defense solutions. It agreed to acquire the businesses for $56 million in cash or stock, valuing them at less than 3x projected 2027 revenue. Up to $32 million in additional payments could be tied to performance through 2028.

The first acquisition, Insignito, brings AI-enabled acoustic intelligence to Ondas' counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) portfolio. Insignito's DUMBO system uses passive acoustic sensing to detect, classify, track and localize drones based on their sound signatures. The technology can complement existing radar, RF and electro-optical sensors, creating a multi-layered detection architecture. Insignito also brings additional technologies, including WaveGuide for acoustic mission planning, Silent Propellers for reducing drone acoustic signatures and Banshee, an acoustic-enabled interception technology under development. For Ondas, the acquisition could expand its C-UAS offering across detection, planning, signature management and interception.

The second acquisition, Ottopia Defense, focuses on keeping unmanned systems connected to their human operators. Ottopia's platform is designed to maintain the flow of video, telemetry, mission information and commands between unmanned vehicles and remote operators. Its architecture dynamically manages operational data across available communication channels. Its combination of AI-enabled autonomy, ultra-low-latency teleoperation and remote control could also support a one-to-many operating model, where a relatively small number of operators supervise multiple unmanned assets. This is likely relevant to Ondas' strategy around autonomous ground vehicles such as Iron Wave.

The third acquisition, Caribou Labs, addresses dependence on satellite navigation. Caribou specializes in resilient communications, deterministic identification and GPS-independent positioning and timing. Per Ondas, Caribou's technology is already deployed in active conflict environments and has a global pipeline of potential customer opportunities. Moreover, ONDS is on an acquisition spree. Recently, it agreed to acquire GATE and Bron for $205 million, adding advanced electronic fusing capabilities. In August, Ondas proposed acquiring Aran Defense Ltd. to boost in-house engineering, prototyping and scalable defense production.

How Do ONDS’ Competitors Compare on M&A Ground?

Draganfly DPRO completed the acquisition of Skip Dynamix last month, strengthening its defense drone portfolio and expanding its presence in the low-cost autonomous aerial systems market. The deal adds fixed-wing drone technology and enhances Draganfly’s AI, autonomy and military systems capabilities, while improving its positioning in U.S., NATO and Indo-Pacific defense programs. The acquisition adds the Orca fixed-wing drone to Draganfly’s portfolio, expanding its capabilities in long-range autonomous systems. It also broadens the company’s reach across defense and government markets, creates revenue growth opportunities and retains key fixed-wing drone expertise through the continued involvement of Skip Dynamix’s founders.

In May, Unusual Machines UMAC agreed to acquire Upgrade Energy for approximately $52 million, adding battery and power system expertise to its drone components business. Recently, UMAC invested an additional $20 million in XTEND AI Robotics, bringing its total investment to $27.5 million as part of XTEND’s $110 million financing. In 2025, UMAC bought Rotor Lab, adding high-performance drone motor and propulsion technologies to its portfolio. The deal strengthens its commercial and defense offerings, supports U.S. manufacturing expansion and enhances motor design and engineering capabilities. It also agreed to acquire Aloft Technologies for $14.5 million, adding leading drone fleet and airspace management capabilities to its portfolio.
