Can ABBV's New Parkinson's Pill Strengthen Its Neuroscience Franchise?

AbbVie ABBV continues to expand its neuroscience franchise. The company recently secured FDA approval for Juvmo, a once-daily oral treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD). A commercial launch is targeted for October 2026.

Juvmo Expands AbbVie’s Neuroscience Portfolio

Juvmo is a potentially important addition to AbbVie’s PD portfolio, given its differentiated mechanism and broad treatment positioning. The drug is the first selective D1/D5 dopamine receptor agonist that can be used both as a standalone treatment and in combination with levodopa, the current standard of care for PD symptoms. This provides physicians another option for managing motor symptoms as the disease progresses and could help address the limitations associated with increasing reliance on levodopa.

Juvmo’s approval further expands AbbVie’s PD portfolio, which already includes Vyalev and Duopa. PD has emerged as a new pillar of the company’s neuroscience franchise, with management expecting the three therapies to collectively represent a peak-sales opportunity of more than $5 billion.

The neuroscience segment is one of AbbVie’s fastest-growing therapeutic areas. It now accounts for nearly a fifth of the company’s overall topline and generated $6.1 billion in revenues in the first half of 2026. Revenues from neuroscience drugs rose 22% year over year, driven by broad-based growth across the marketed portfolio. The company currently expects to record approximately $12.7 billion in neuroscience revenues in 2026.

The approval could also provide a commercial payoff from AbbVie’s acquisition of Cerevel Therapeutics for approximately $8.7 billion in 2024. The deal came under pressure after emraclidine, one of its key assets, failed in two registration-enabling phase II studies in schizophrenia, prompting AbbVie to record a $3.5 billion impairment charge. With Juvmo now approved, its commercial performance could become an important part of the value story behind the Cerevel acquisition.

ABBV’s Competition in the Neuroscience Space

Other bigger players in the neuroscience space include Biogen BIIB and Johnson & Johnson JNJ.

As revenues from its legacy multiple sclerosis portfolio continue to decline, Biogen is increasingly focused on expanding its neuroscience business through newer therapies. Along with partner Eisai, Biogen markets Leqembi, one of the two FDA-approved treatments for AD. The company also markets Zurzuvae, the first FDA-approved oral treatment for postpartum depression.

JNJ's neuroscience business is anchored by the depression therapy Spravato and the long-acting antipsychotic Invega Sustenna. The company's acquisition of Intra-Cellular Therapies last year further strengthened its portfolio by adding Caplyta, an approved treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar depression.
