Equinor Scales Back Troll Project to Preserve European Gas Supplies

Equinor ASA EQNR and its partners have decided to complete the Troll West Electrification (“TWEL”) project without installing a second electric export compressor on the Troll C platform.

The revised plan prioritizes uninterrupted gas deliveries from the Norwegian continental shelf while retaining substantial emissions reductions already achieved. The move highlights Equinor's focus on production reliability, capital discipline and value creation.

Troll C Production Takes Priority for Equinor

The original plan, approved in 2021, included another electric export compressor at Troll C. However, installing the equipment required extensive modifications and reduced output for up to 21 months.

The partners have opted to avoid the disruption, particularly as Troll has operated at maximum capacity throughout the year since 2023. Preserving existing compression capacity is increasingly important to the field's operating performance.

Additional Gas Supply Supports EQNR

The revised approach is expected to make approximately 2.3 billion standard cubic meters of additional natural gas available to Europe during 2027 and 2028. The volume represents roughly two years of consumption for one million European households.

Maintaining uninterrupted gas supplies enhances EQNR's revenue opportunities and reinforces its position in the European energy market.

Emissions Savings Remain Significant for Equinor

TWEL has reduced annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the Troll area by approximately 330,000 tons. This represents about 75% of the 440,000 tons of annual reductions envisioned in the original development plan.

Troll B and Troll C underwent partial electrification in 2024, building on Troll A's use of shore-based power since 1996. The improvements strengthen the field's lower-emissions production profile without prolonged production downtime.

EQNR Avoids a Short-Lived Investment

The additional compressor was expected to be needed only until the mid-2030s, while Troll C is projected to operate until around 2050. Dropping the installation supports Equinor’s more efficient capital allocation.

The decision frees up about 26 megawatts (MW) of reserved power capacity at Kollsnes for other uses.

Equinor's Troll Decision Benefits Other Energy Players

The decision to maintain stable gas production at Troll also benefits its partners, Shell plc SHEL, TotalEnergies SE TTE, ConocoPhillips COP and Petoro AS. SHEL, TTE, COP and Petoro hold approximately 8.19%, 3.69%, 1.64% and 55.93% interests, respectively, in the field.

Like Equinor, Shell, TotalEnergies and ConocoPhillips rely on efficient upstream operations and favorable commodity prices to support earnings and cash generation. Preserving Troll's production capacity helps protect their exposure to Norwegian gas supplies while avoiding prolonged operational disruptions.

Although SHEL, TTE and COP stand to benefit from stable production and sustained European gas demand, fluctuations in oil and natural gas prices remain important factors influencing their profitability.

What the Decision Means for Investors

EQNR's decision reflects its commitment to maximizing value from existing assets while maintaining reliable energy supplies to Europe. Sustained gas production and lower emissions strengthen Troll's long-term operating profile.

The advantages support Equinor's investment appeal, although future returns remain linked to market conditions.
