Systems growth, led by Purion products, drove the increase in revenue. Product gross margin rose to 44.9% from 43.9%; service gross margin increased to 5.6% from 4.3%. Operating expenses increased 13.2% to $159.1 million, slower than revenue growth, reducing operating expenses to 24.0% of revenue from 29.6%. Research and development spending was $65.4 million, or 9.9% of revenue.
Liquidity, debt and capital
- Cash and cash equivalents were $294.9 million at year-end, up from $203.5 million; working capital was $469.1 million.
- The company reported no bank borrowings. It had a $40 million revolving credit facility, with no borrowings outstanding and a $5.9 million letter of credit reducing availability.
- Finance lease obligations, principally from the headquarters sale-leaseback, totaled $47.4 million; total lease liabilities were $56.5 million. The filing’s contractual-obligations table lists $98.0 million of future sale-leaseback payments, including interest.
- Capital expenditures were $8.7 million. Management projected approximately $13.0 million in 2022 capital expenditures.
- Cash used in financing activities was $52.5 million, including $50.0 million of share repurchases. The 2021 repurchase authorization ended December 31, 2021.
Material changes and operating context
- Systems backlog, including deferred systems revenue, rose to $460.6 million from $116.2 million. Fourth-quarter bookings were $194.0 million, compared with $131.5 million a year earlier. Orders may be cancelled or rescheduled, and backlog is not necessarily predictive of future sales.
- Deferred revenue increased to $68.4 million from $23.1 million, primarily due to system prepayments and higher system sales.
- The ten largest customers accounted for 69.5% of revenue, down from 74.0%. Two customers represented 17.8% and 15.4% individually; Samsung Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation each accounted for at least 10% of revenue.
- International revenue was 92.6% of total revenue; Asia represented 83.9% of system revenue. The company opened a South Korea operations center and expanded Beverly manufacturing capacity.
- Axcelis introduced the Purion H200, aimed at power-device production, and Purion XEmax, aimed at image sensors. Management reported a fourth consecutive year with gross margin above 40%.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management objectives, not formal earnings guidance: The 2022 strategy targets an $850 million revenue model run rate during 2022, with a $1 billion model in future years. Priorities include expanding Purion placements, pursuing mature-process, memory and leading-edge opportunities, growing aftermarket revenue, improving gross margins and considering potential shareholder returns. Management said it expected continued consistent, profitable performance in 2022.
- Management cited logistical challenges from geopolitical conditions and COVID-19. Key risks include semiconductor-industry cyclicality, supply constraints and component cost increases, reliance on a small number of large customers, export controls and trade tensions affecting China, intense competition, and dependence on successful product development and customer acceptance.
- Other risks include customer concentration in Asia, potential shipment delays or cancellations, cybersecurity incidents, foreign-exchange movements, and environmental and safety regulation. A major Chinese customer was placed on the U.S. Entity List; shipments require export licenses.
- Other expense was $6.9 million versus $2.2 million, including $5.1 million of sale-leaseback interest expense and $2.5 million of foreign-currency translation losses. The effective tax rate was 18.1%, compared with 10.6%; the prior-year rate benefited from a $4.3 million previously unrecognized tax benefit.
- Inventory increased to $195.0 million from $161.1 million. The auditor identified excess-inventory estimation and systems revenue recognition as critical audit matters. No material litigation or material environmental matter was reported. Ernst & Young issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls.
Investor verification priorities
- Assess whether the $460.6 million backlog and elevated bookings convert to recognized systems revenue, given cancellation and rescheduling rights and deferred performance obligations.
- Verify the assumptions underlying the $850 million 2022 revenue model run-rate objective; it is a strategic target, not a formal earnings forecast.
- Monitor customer concentration, especially the two large customers, and export-license or trade developments affecting China and Asia shipments.
- Track supplier availability, inventory levels and reserves, and whether capacity expansion sustains margins without excess inventory or added costs.
- Review cash generation against the $50.0 million of 2021 repurchases, lease commitments, purchase commitments and planned 2022 capital expenditures.
