Q3 revenue increased 4%, while nine-month revenue declined 8%. Q3 gross margin expanded to 47%, primarily because of lower acquisition-related intangible amortization, stronger Client revenue and product mix. Nine-month gross margin was unchanged at 46%.

Research and development expense increased 18% year over year in Q3 and 20% for the nine-month period, primarily reflecting higher employee-related costs and increased investment in artificial intelligence. Stock-based compensation was $353 million in Q3 and $1.010 billion for the nine-month period.

Segment Performance and Material Changes

  • Data Center: Q3 revenue was $1.598 billion, broadly flat year over year; nine-month revenue declined 4% to $4.214 billion. Higher EPYC processor sales were offset by lower adaptive SoC sales in Q3. Operating income declined to $306 million in Q3 and $601 million for nine months, primarily due to increased AI-related R&D and product mix.
  • Client: Q3 revenue increased 42% to $1.453 billion, driven by higher Ryzen mobile processor sales and improved PC market conditions. Unit shipments increased 62%, partially offset by a 10% decline in average selling price. Nine-month revenue declined 40% to $3.190 billion because of weak PC demand and supply-chain inventory correction during the first half of 2023.
  • Gaming: Q3 revenue declined 8% to $1.506 billion, primarily because of lower semi-custom revenue, partially offset by higher Radeon GPU sales. Nine-month revenue declined 6% to $4.844 billion. Q3 operating income increased to $208 million.
  • Embedded: Q3 revenue declined 5% to $1.243 billion, primarily due to lower communications-market revenue. Nine-month revenue increased 35% to $4.264 billion, mainly because Xilinx contributed for the full nine-month period in 2023.
  • Acquisition-related items: Acquisition-related intangible amortization declined to $660 million in Q3 and $2.2 billion for nine months, compared with $1.0 billion and $2.5 billion, respectively, in the prior-year periods. AMD continues to carry $21.950 billion of acquisition-related intangible assets and $24.186 billion of goodwill.

Liquidity, Debt and Cash Flow

  • Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled approximately $5.8 billion at September 30, 2023, compared with $5.9 billion at December 31, 2022.
  • Cash and cash equivalents were $3.561 billion; short-term investments were $2.224 billion.
  • Nine-month operating cash flow was $1.286 billion, down from $2.998 billion in the prior-year period. Accounts receivable increased $929 million and inventories increased $674 million, partly to support product ramps.
  • Investing cash use was $1.573 billion, including $407 million of capital expenditures and $3.312 billion of short-term investment purchases, partly offset by $2.165 billion of investment maturities and sales.
  • Financing cash use was $987 million, including $752 million of share repurchases and $382 million of employee tax-withholding share repurchases.
  • Total debt principal was $2.5 billion, including $750 million of senior notes due in 2024. AMD had $3.0 billion available under its revolving credit facility, no borrowings under that facility, and no commercial paper outstanding.
  • Unconditional purchase commitments totaled approximately $5.041 billion, including $2.426 billion due during the remainder of 2023.

Outlook, Commentary, Risks and Unusual Items

AMD states that available cash, short-term investments, operating cash flow, its revolving credit facility and commercial paper program are expected to fund operations, capital expenditures and purchase commitments over the next 12 months and beyond. The filing does not provide a clear numerical revenue or earnings forecast for future periods.

  • Management identified improving PC conditions in Q3 but noted continued exposure to semiconductor cyclicality, customer inventory corrections and seasonal demand patterns.
  • AI investment is increasing R&D expense, while AMD faces intense competition in AI accelerators, CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs and embedded products.
  • AMD relies heavily on third-party manufacturers, particularly TSMC for products using 7-nanometer and smaller process nodes, as well as third-party assembly, testing and packaging providers.
  • October 2023 export controls may restrict shipments of certain advanced computing products, including specified Instinct and Versal products, to China or other restricted destinations without licenses.
  • International sales represented 68% of Q3 revenue. Geopolitical tensions involving China and Taiwan, export controls, tariffs, foreign exchange and supply-chain disruptions remain material risks.
  • AMD completed implementation of a new ERP system during the nine-month period; management concluded that disclosure controls remained effective and internal controls continued to operate as designed.
  • AMD extended its Austin, Texas facility lease through September 2038. The new lease involves approximately $232 million of noncancelable payments and includes up to approximately $26.6 million of tenant-improvement allowances.
  • No material legal proceedings were reported for the quarter. Management nevertheless disclosed continuing exposure to intellectual-property, product liability, tax, environmental, cybersecurity and regulatory claims.
