Revenue comprised Platform $78.3 million, up 3%, and Products $89.1 million, down 15%. Products’ decline reflected fewer accessories and materials sold, partly offset by higher connected-machine unit sales. Platform gross margin was 89%, versus 90%; Products gross margin was 25%, versus 8%. Management attributed the Products margin improvement mainly to lower excess-inventory write-downs, improved connected-machine mix and lower outbound freight. Consolidated margins above are calculated from reported revenue and gross profit.

Operating expenses were $66.4 million, approximately flat year over year: research and development fell 17% to $14.9 million; sales and marketing rose 12% to $33.0 million; general and administrative expense was $18.5 million, down 1%. Interest income contributed to other income, which rose to $3.1 million. The effective tax rate was 30.6%, compared with 29.2%.

Cash, liquidity and capital allocation

  • At March 31, cash and cash equivalents were $179.0 million and marketable securities were $102.7 million, for combined cash and securities of $281.7 million.
  • Operating cash flow was $56.7 million; investing activities used $5.1 million and financing activities used $14.6 million. Cash ended the quarter at $179.0 million.
  • Inventory was $256.5 million net, including $55.0 million in reserves; $46.4 million of reserves related to excess accessories and materials inventory.
  • No borrowings were outstanding under the $300 million revolving facility; the full $300 million was available. The facility matures in August 2027. Cricut reported compliance with its covenants.
  • The company repurchased 1.7 million shares for $10.8 million, completing its prior repurchase authorization. On May 6, 2024, the Board approved a new $50 million repurchase authorization and a $0.40-per-share special dividend plus a recurring semi-annual $0.10-per-share dividend, payable July 19, 2024 to holders of record July 2.

Material changes and management commentary

  • Active Users were 5.952 million, essentially unchanged year over year; 90-Day Engaged Users declined to 3.527 million from 3.710 million. Paid Subscribers rose to 2.797 million from 2.715 million. Platform ARPU was $52.26, versus $48.51.
  • Management cited subscriber growth as the driver of Platform revenue growth and reduced inventory write-downs as a major contributor to improved Products profitability.
  • Q1 restructuring incurred $0.9 million of severance costs. Management expects approximately $6.3 million in gross 2024 savings across research and development ($3.2 million), sales and marketing ($2.5 million), and general and administrative ($0.6 million).
  • Management stated that cash, securities, expected operating cash generation and available credit should meet cash requirements for the next 12 months and beyond. No specific revenue or earnings guidance was provided.
  • The filing describes seasonality, with historically higher revenue in Q4 and greater promotional discounting then. Management cautioned that recent demand patterns may not reflect normal seasonality.

Risks, contingencies and unusual items

  • Management highlighted softening consumer demand, declining new-user growth, and the possibility that Paid Subscribers could remain flat or decline in the short term. Accessories and materials competition and product demand are key uncertainties.
  • Inventory forecasting and obsolescence remain notable risks, given the reserve balance. Supply-chain exposure includes reliance on two primary contract manufacturers and suppliers concentrated in Malaysia and China, as well as tariff, trade and geopolitical risks.
  • Other disclosed risks include retail-partner concentration, product quality and warranty claims, cybersecurity and privacy, intellectual-property disputes, and dependence on key employees and third-party cloud services.
  • The company reported no material pending legal proceeding and no litigation contingency management believed would materially affect financial position, results or liquidity. It participates in a lawsuit challenging certain U.S. tariffs; the filing does not provide a clear expected outcome.
  • The company reduced its workforce by approximately 8% in March 2024. It also reported that disclosure controls were effective and that no material change in internal control over financial reporting occurred during the quarter.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether Platform subscriber growth and ARPU can continue to offset weakness in Products revenue, especially accessories and materials.
  • Whether Products margin improvement is sustainable or primarily reflects lower inventory write-downs and freight costs; monitor inventory levels and reserves.
  • Why operating cash flow fell year over year despite higher net income, including inventory, receivables and vendor-payment movements.
  • The cash and covenant impact of the newly approved dividends and $50 million repurchase program, and whether capital returns affect investment needs.
  • Progress against restructuring savings, user engagement trends, and exposure to consumer demand, retail partners, tariffs and concentrated manufacturing.
