Quarterly revenue growth reflected higher investment advisory fees, driven mainly by higher average fund assets; shareholder service fees also rose. For the quarter, average AUM was $3.46 billion, up 15.9% year over year; for the six-month period, it was $3.2 billion, up 7.7%. At March 31, AUM totaled $3.85 billion, up 35.5% from a year earlier, reflecting market appreciation, net inflows, and the CCM fund-asset purchases.

Operating expenses rose 16.1% for the quarter and 9.9% year to date. Their share of revenue improved to 72.3% in the quarter but increased to 74.4% for the six-month period. Higher compensation, general and administrative costs, distribution expenses, and sub-advisory fees contributed. Higher interest income also supported earnings.

Material developments, outlook, and risks

  • The company acquired management-related assets for two CCM funds in November 2023 and February 2024; the funds were reorganized into the Hennessy Stance ESG ETF. The transactions added approximately $71 million of AUM at closing and $1.0 million of capitalized purchase price and other costs during the six months.
  • The Novato office lease was renewed for three years through July 31, 2027, adding a $1.1 million right-of-use asset and long-term lease liability.
  • Management described its strategy as pursuing acquisitions and organic growth through asset retention and inflows. It highlighted market performance and economic conditions, while noting that fund redemptions, investment performance, market movements, competition, regulation, and compliance costs can affect results. No specific earnings or revenue guidance was provided.
  • Management reported positive total returns for all 17 funds over the year ended March 31, 2024; three funds had negative annualized returns over the three-year period. It noted that market rate-cut expectations had moderated amid stronger economic data.
  • Contractual expense-ratio limitations for three funds were set to expire February 28, 2025, unless extended; fee waivers were $0.08 million in each six-month comparison period. The company reported no other significant contingencies with original terms exceeding one year and no material subsequent events.
  • No material changes to the risk factors in the 2023 Form 10-K were reported. Management concluded disclosure controls were effective and reported no material changes in internal control over financial reporting.
