Q2 revenue growth was led by CAG, which increased 10.5% to $866.7 million, including 11.0% organic growth. CAG recurring revenue increased 11.2%, while CAG instrument revenue declined 6.0%.
For the six months, operating cash flow was $384.2 million versus $180.6 million in the prior-year period. Capital expenditures were $67.0 million, compared with $61.9 million, and the company expects approximately $180.0 million of capital expenditures for full-year 2023. Cash and cash equivalents were $132.8 million at June 30, 2023, compared with $112.5 million at December 31, 2022.
Total debt was approximately $1.036 billion, including $264.0 million under the Credit Facility and $771.8 million of current and long-term debt. Material changes versus the prior comparable period
- Revenue growth benefited from price increases, higher U.S. companion-animal testing volumes, expansion of the installed instrument base, and growth in veterinary software and diagnostic imaging subscriptions.
- Gross margin improved because of pricing, reference-laboratory and operational productivity, improved software margins, and favorable product mix. Inflation, labor and product costs, and foreign exchange effects partially offset these benefits.
- Operating income benefited substantially from the absence of the prior-year $80 million in-process research and development charge related to licensed technology. Six-month general and administrative expense also benefited from a $16 million customer contract resolution in the first quarter of 2023.
- Research and development expense declined 62.3% in Q2 and 44.2% for the six-month period, primarily because of the prior-year licensing charge.
- Operating cash flow increased by $203.7 million year over year. Financing cash use included $315.0 million of Credit Facility repayments, compared with $537.5 million of borrowings in the prior-year period. No open-market share repurchases occurred during the first six months of 2023, versus $573.1 million in the prior year.
Guidance, outlook, commentary, and risks
The filing does not provide a clear full-year revenue or earnings guidance range. Management expects cash on hand, operating cash generation, and committed borrowing capacity to fund operations, capital requirements, and anticipated growth for at least the next twelve months. The company expects to repay the $75.0 million 2023 Series A Notes when they mature on December 11, 2023.
Management estimates that foreign currency effects will increase revenue by approximately $30 million but reduce operating profit by approximately $3 million and diluted EPS by approximately $0.02 for the remainder of 2023, based on stated exchange-rate assumptions. Foreign currency hedging is expected to reduce operating profit by approximately $17 million and diluted EPS by approximately $0.16 over that period. The estimates may differ materially from actual results.
- Macroeconomic uncertainty, inflation, supply-chain challenges, geopolitical instability, and adverse foreign exchange movements may affect demand, costs, margins, and liquidity.
- International CAG volume growth was constrained by macroeconomic conditions; LPD performance was pressured by lower herd-health screening volumes and reduced China imports.
- Other segment results continued to decline following the discontinuation of active marketing for OPTI COVID-19 PCR products and services.
- An ongoing royalty litigation matter includes a plaintiff claim of approximately $50 million. IDEXX has accrued $27.5 million, believes the claim lacks merit, and cannot predict the outcome.
- Customer acquisition costs were $162.6 million and volume-commitment contract assets were $207.9 million at June 30, 2023. Revenue timing and realizability depend partly on future customer purchases and estimates.
- The company discontinued actively marketing OPTI COVID-19 PCR testing products and services during the first quarter of 2023.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Confirm the sustainability of CAG recurring-revenue growth and pricing benefits after adjusting for foreign exchange and macroeconomic conditions.
- Assess whether the unusually favorable year-over-year operating-income comparison, including the prior-year $80 million licensing charge, distorts underlying margin expansion.
- Monitor LPD volumes, international demand, China-related herd-health screening, and the continuing decline in the Other segment.
- Verify execution of the approximately $180 million 2023 capital expenditure plan and repayment of the $75 million note due in December 2023.
- Review interest-rate exposure, the $250 million interest-rate swap effective through October 20, 2025, and remaining Credit Facility availability.
- Evaluate the royalty litigation exposure, customer-program contract assets and acquisition costs, and the assumptions supporting future revenue recognition.
