Research and development expense rose to $84.7 million in Q2 and $160.3 million in the first half; selling, general and administrative expense rose to $40.9 million and $77.9 million, respectively. Material changes, outlook and notable items
- Revenue grew 9.6% in the first half, but fell 2.1% in Q2 as the sharp reduction in collaboration revenue more than offset growth in product sales and royalties. The company moved from operating income to operating losses in both comparative periods.
- Management said available cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities should fund capital needs for at least the next 12 months. It also noted that future funding needs may require equity, debt or collaboration financing; no specific revenue, earnings or cash-flow guidance was provided.
- In June 2014, the RESPONSE Phase III trial in polycythemia vera met its primary endpoint; the company submitted an sNDA to the FDA. In July, it reported that the RELIEF trial did not meet its primary endpoint. These developments involve different trials; further RELIEF analyses were ongoing.
- Two Phase III pancreatic-cancer trials of ruxolitinib in patients with elevated CRP had begun. The company reported positive results in a prespecified subgroup of an earlier Phase II study, not a confirmed Phase III benefit.
- Clinical trials of INCB47986 were placed on hold pending further preclinical work after toxicology findings. Incyte discontinued the INCB24360 ovarian-cancer monotherapy trial after no efficacy advantage over control; combination studies continued.
- In July 2014, Incyte earned a $25.0 million Novartis milestone following Japanese approval of JAKAVI for myelofibrosis; it expected to record this as Q3 contract revenue.
- The new Wilmington headquarters was under construction. At June 30, assets under construction were $49.2 million and the related lease liability was $38.9 million. Contractual obligations totaled $978.2 million, including debt principal, interest and lease commitments.
- Key risks include reliance on JAKAFI and a limited number of specialty pharmacies, reimbursement and pricing pressure, third-party manufacturing and supplier concentration, clinical and regulatory uncertainty, collaborator execution, substantial debt, and continued operating losses. Management reported disclosure controls were effective and no material change in internal control over financial reporting.
