Revenue growth was attributed primarily to higher average selling prices, including sales of higher-value products. Automotive revenue rose 93.1%, storage and computing 24.1%, communications 22.2%, and enterprise data 10.9%. Consumer revenue fell 20.8% and industrial revenue fell 2.2%. DC-to-DC products generated $425.2 million, about 94% of revenue. Asia accounted for 84% of revenue.

Gross margin declined mainly because of product mix, partly offset by lower warranty expense as a share of revenue. Operating expenses rose 9.6% to $134.5 million: R&D increased 17.8%, principally on new product development, while SG&A increased 3.1%. Other income was $5.3 million versus an expense of $0.6 million a year earlier, helped by deferred-compensation investment gains and higher interest income.

Cash, liquidity and obligations

  • Cash and cash equivalents were $489.0 million and short-term investments were $428.6 million at March 31, 2023, totaling $917.6 million, up from $737.9 million at year-end. Working capital was $1.307 billion.
  • Operating cash flow was $218.8 million; investing activities provided $12.3 million and financing activities used $32.3 million. Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash increased by $200.4 million during the quarter.
  • The filing lists no borrowings or debt balance on the balance sheet. Total liabilities were $450.4 million. Purchase commitments to suppliers and other parties totaled $1.029 billion, including $406.7 million classified as short-term. These commitments include wafer, inventory, manufacturing, facility, equipment and licensing obligations.
  • MPS had prepaid $170.0 million under a four-year wafer supply agreement, including $50.0 million classified as short-term. The company said available cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, together with operating cash generation, should meet liquidity needs for the next 12 months and beyond.

Changes, outlook and risks

  • Revenue growth and improved operating and net margins were accompanied by a slight gross-margin decline. Operating cash flow more than doubled year over year, while inventories declined to $430.8 million from $447.3 million at December 31, 2022.
  • The board declared a $1.00-per-share quarterly dividend, versus $0.75 a year earlier. Future dividends remain at the board’s discretion. Cash dividends declared for the quarter totaled $47.3 million.
  • No specific revenue or earnings guidance for the remainder of 2023 is provided in the supplied filing text. Management described the semiconductor industry as cyclical, noted that revenue has historically tended to be higher in the second half, and cautioned that market conditions and product timing can affect that pattern. The company cited uncertain macroeconomic conditions, including inflation, interest rates, banking-sector concerns and the global downturn.
  • Key exposures include customer and revenue concentration in Asia and China, dependence on distributors and third-party wafer/manufacturing capacity, demand and inventory forecasting uncertainty, export controls and U.S.-China trade tensions, and geopolitical risks affecting Taiwan and China. Two distributors each represented at least 20% of Q1 revenue; together they accounted for 41%. MPS said it had no material pending legal proceedings at quarter-end, although legal expenses increased year over year.
  • Management reported disclosure controls were effective at March 31, 2023, with no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter. No material change in market-risk assessment was reported.

Important facts for investors to verify

  1. Whether the strong automotive growth and higher-value product mix persist, and how consumer-market weakness develops.
  2. Whether gross margin stabilizes, given the reported unfavorable product-mix effect.
  3. How distributor concentration, Asia exposure and customer inventory or order changes affect revenue and receivables.
  4. Whether the $1.029 billion of purchase commitments and wafer-capacity arrangements align with future demand and cash-flow needs.
  5. How the company’s outlook evolves: the filing describes risks and general expectations but provides no quantified Q2 or full-year guidance in the supplied text.
