Material changes and management commentary
- Revenue increased $1.75 million year over year. Management attributed higher net interest income to growth in earning assets and a 4-basis-point increase in their yield; interest-bearing funding cost declined to 0.49% from 0.74%.
- Mortgage originations rose to $75.0 million from $33.6 million. Mortgage loan and servicing-rights sale gains were $1.4 million versus $0.6 million; net mortgage banking revenue was $1.5 million versus $0.8 million.
- Noninterest expense rose to $6.64 million from $6.08 million, reflecting higher mortgage and SBA commission costs and expenses associated with the new Findlay branch facility. Income tax expense was $0.64 million versus $0.33 million.
- Loans declined $4.6 million from year-end, while deposits rose $27.4 million. Borrowed funds consisting of FHLB advances and repurchase agreements totaled $44.6 million, up from $42.7 million. Equity was 10.7% of assets, down from 11.1% at year-end.
- Delinquent loans were $6.8 million, up $3.8 million from a year earlier; management attributed the increase to two commercial real estate credits undergoing restructuring. Nonperforming assets were $6.18 million, or 0.86% of assets, versus $6.81 million, or 1.05%, a year earlier. The allowance was 1.33% of loans and 114.3% of nonperforming loans.
Liquidity, capital, outlook and risks
- Liquid assets were $152.5 million, compared with $118.6 million at year-end. The company reported $30.8 million of additional FHLB borrowing capacity, $17.1 million of unpledged securities and $14.0 million of unused federal funds lines. Management said liquidity was sufficient for its needs.
- Operating cash flow remained negative, partly reflecting the mortgage origination-and-sale cycle; financing inflows were supported by deposit growth. Cash increased $21.57 million during the quarter.
- State Bank was classified as well capitalized. At March 31, its Tier 1 leverage ratio was 8.53%, common equity Tier 1 and Tier 1 risk-based ratios were each 10.88%, and total risk-based capital was 12.13%. Management said the bank met the new Basel III requirements, including the full capital conservation buffer, on a pro forma basis. It elected to exclude accumulated other comprehensive income from regulatory capital calculations.
- The filing provides no specific earnings or revenue guidance. Management cautioned that results are subject to banking, economic, regulatory, interest-rate, credit-demand, competitive and other risks; it stated that risk factors had not materially changed from the 2014 Form 10-K.
- Unusual or notable items include the $0.35 million loan-loss provision, increased mortgage-related gains and $0.225 million of preferred dividends. The preferred shares are convertible; their potential conversion increased diluted weighted-average shares to 6.379 million from 4.894 million a year earlier. Management considered securities’ unrealized losses temporary and reported no other-than-temporary impairment. Ordinary-course legal proceedings were not expected by management to have a material adverse effect.
