Segment results and material changes

  • Biotechnology: Sales fell 18.0% to $1.524 billion; core sales fell 17.0%. Operating margin declined to 21.3% from 32.0%. Bioprocessing weakness reflected reduced customer inventory and tighter funding conditions; discovery and medical sales also declined.
  • Life Sciences: Sales rose 2.0% to $1.745 billion, primarily due to acquisitions, while core sales fell 3.0%. Operating margin declined to 13.5% from 18.8%, affected by acquired-business dilution, lower core sales and an acquisition-related inventory charge.
  • Diagnostics: Sales rose 6.5% to $2.527 billion; core sales grew 7.5%, led by molecular diagnostics and North America. Operating margin increased to 32.8% from 28.5%.

Consolidated operating margin decreased 290 basis points. Management attributed the decline to lower core sales, product mix and reduced cost-structure leverage (170 basis points), acquired-business dilution (80 basis points), and a $25 million Abcam acquisition-related inventory fair-value charge (40 basis points). The charge also weighed on gross margin.

Net earnings for Q1 2023 included $210 million from discontinued operations; Q1 2024 had none. Accordingly, total net earnings declined to $1.088 billion from $1.450 billion, in addition to the decline in continuing-operations earnings.

Cash, outlook and risks

  • Operating cash flow from continuing operations declined $67 million, or 4%, year over year. Cash from operations, investing and financing was $1.739 billion, negative $321 million and negative $133 million, respectively. Cash ended the quarter at $7.031 billion, up from $5.864 billion at year-end.
  • Management expects 2024 effective tax rate of approximately 17.5% for the remainder of the year, subject to earnings mix, stock-based compensation tax benefits, audits and other discrete items.
  • Management expects bioprocessing core revenue to decline for full-year 2024, with gradual year-over-year demand improvement through the year; reduced demand, including customer inventory reductions, is expected to continue into Q2. The filing provides no overall full-year revenue or earnings guidance.
  • Management said high-growth-market sales fell 12% year over year, with high-teens core revenue declines in China. Biotechnology weakness was linked to lower funding and activity levels; currency changes also affect reported results.
  • Other risks highlighted include competition, regulation, product and technology development, acquisitions and integration, foreign exchange, debt, cybersecurity and supply-chain disruption. The IRS and other tax authorities continue examinations; Danaher noted the IRS could propose similar self-insurance tax adjustments for periods after 2018, while management believes its tax positions comply with applicable law.
  • Foreign currency translation losses of $948 million contributed to a $996 million other comprehensive loss and comprehensive income of just $92 million. These translation effects were recorded in equity, not as a comparable reduction to net earnings.

Key facts for investors to verify

  • Whether Biotechnology and China demand stabilize as management anticipates, and whether bioprocessing improves gradually during 2024.
  • How Abcam integration, acquired-business dilution and intangible amortization affect margins and earnings in subsequent quarters.
  • Whether Diagnostics growth persists and offsets weakness in Biotechnology and parts of Life Sciences.
  • Progress against the approximately 17.5% remainder-of-year tax-rate expectation and the outcome of ongoing tax examinations.
  • Debt maturities, liquidity and currency exposure, including the effect of exchange-rate movements on sales and comprehensive income.
