Q2 sales increased 20%, while six-month sales increased 9%, primarily because of substantially higher sales volumes. Profitability declined sharply because of lower realized prices, higher production costs, increased depreciation and depletion, and inventory valuation charges.

  • Q2 potash sales volume increased 28% to 235,000 tons; Trio® volume increased 77% to 62,000 tons.
  • Six-month potash sales volume increased 30% to 478,000 tons; Trio® volume increased 32% to 98,000 tons.
  • Q2 average net realized potash price fell 18% to $329 per ton; the six-month price fell 21% to $323 per ton.
  • Q2 average net realized Trio® price declined 3% to $350 per ton; the six-month price declined 2% to $347 per ton.
  • Q2 average potash gross margin fell to $51 per ton from $134; six-month margin fell to $40 from $149. Trio® margin fell to $76 per ton from $101 in Q2 and to $60 from $92 for the six months.
  • Six-month cost of goods sold increased 45% to $158.0 million. Lower-of-cost-or-market inventory adjustments were $4.7 million, including approximately $4.0 million related to the HB Solar Solution mine startup.

Liquidity, cash flow, debt, and capital investment

  • Cash, cash equivalents, and investments totaled $35.1 million at June 30, 2014, compared with $25.1 million at December 31, 2013.
  • Six-month operating cash flow was $55.8 million. Investing cash use was $24.6 million, including $45.1 million of capital additions offset by $20.6 million of investment proceeds.
  • Capital investments were approximately $24.0 million during the first six months, compared with $123.8 million in the prior-year period. Management expected approximately $40 million to $50 million of capital investment for 2014, versus $256.2 million in 2013.
  • Long-term debt was $150.0 million, consisting of unsecured senior notes due from 2020 through 2025. Estimated fair value was $137.0 million.
  • No amounts were outstanding under the $250 million unsecured revolving credit facility at June 30, 2014; $141 million was available subject to covenant-based limitations. The company borrowed and repaid $12 million under the facility during the six months for working capital needs.
  • Intrepid was in compliance with its debt covenants. Management stated that available revolver capacity could remain limited if adjusted EBITDA continued to decline.

Material changes, outlook, and unusual items

  • The HB Solar Solution mine completed its initial harvest season in early June and produced 31,000 tons of finished product during the first six months. Production is expected to ramp through 2016, but startup costs and low initial volumes caused inventory valuation charges.
  • The North compaction project was completed in June 2014, with total capital expenditures of approximately $98 million. West facility recovery projects were expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2014.
  • Management expected second-half 2014 average net realized potash pricing to approximate Q2's $329 per ton. It also expected startup-related inventory adjustments to decrease in the second half, although depreciation expense was expected to continue increasing as projects entered service.
  • Management implemented cost reductions, including elimination of approximately 7% of the workforce, reduced executive compensation, and lower professional-services spending. The company recorded $1.8 million of restructuring expense and estimated annual savings of $12 million to $15 million.
  • Intrepid received $5.9 million of approved New Mexico employment tax credits during Q2. A $2.6 million allowance reversal was recorded in Q1, and a $5.1 million receivable remained at June 30, net of a $2.0 million allowance.
  • Results remain sensitive to global potash supply and demand, agricultural demand, weather, rail availability, energy and labor costs, ore grades, production reliability, and the execution of mining and processing projects.
  • The company reported no material legal claims outstanding and no material changes to the risk factors disclosed in its 2013 Form 10-K. Reclamation security totaled $17.3 million, primarily through surety bonds, and the discounted asset retirement obligation was $21.7 million.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether potash pricing stabilizes near the company's Q2 2014 level and whether higher volumes can offset materially lower prices.
  • The pace, cost, and operating performance of the HB Solar Solution mine, including whether startup inventory charges decline as projected.
  • Whether West facility recovery projects deliver expected production and cost improvements.
  • Adjusted EBITDA, leverage, and fixed-charge coverage because these determine availability under the revolving credit facility.
  • Cash generation relative to remaining 2014 capital needs, debt service, reclamation requirements, and potential working-capital demands.
  • The collectability of the remaining New Mexico employment tax credit receivable and the potential for further tax-related adjustments.
  • Rail transportation availability and freight costs, which materially affect delivery capacity and realized pricing.
