Can AWK's Infrastructure Investments Support Earnings Growth?

American Water Works AWK benefits from strategic investments to upgrade, expand and maintain its water and wastewater infrastructure. These investments aim to improve system reliability, support water quality requirements, replace aging assets and accommodate customer growth.

During the first half of 2026, AWK invested $1.8 billion in infrastructure improvements and growth, including $346 million for regulated acquisitions. The company plans to invest approximately $3.7 billion in 2026 and $19-$20 billion over 2026–2030, including $17-$17.5 billion for infrastructure improvements and replacements across its Regulated Businesses.

These investments enhance operational efficiency, support future rate recovery and strengthen the company’s overall financial performance. Management also reaffirmed its long-term rate-base growth target of 8-9% through 2030, underscoring the importance of infrastructure investments to its earnings growth strategy.

American Water Works is pursuing customer growth through strategic acquisitions and organic expansion across its service territories. Ongoing infrastructure upgrades will help accommodate rising service needs, enhance water quality and provide the capacity required to serve additional customers. AWK expects 2026 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $6.02-$6.12 and targets annual adjusted EPS growth of 7-9%  through 2030 and beyond.

Thus, sustained capital spending, customer expansion, regulatory support and rate-base growth could strengthen AWK’s earnings potential and drive long-term financial growth.

Aging Water Infrastructure Requires Continued Investment

Aging water infrastructure across the United States requires substantial investment to replace deteriorating pipelines and modernize treatment facilities. These upgrades are essential for improving reliability, reducing water losses and ensuring safe water delivery.

American States Water AWR plans to invest $185-$220 million in 2026 to upgrade and maintain its infrastructure. These investments could support rate-base expansion, improve service reliability and strengthen long-term earnings potential.

California Water Service Group CWT plans to invest $627 million in 2026, $667 million in 2027 and 700 million in 2028 to strengthen infrastructure, support PFAS treatment, improve operational efficiency, enhance system reliability and meet water quality requirements.
