Low-Frequency Vs High-Frequency Forex Trading

Many Forex traders seem to think that by trading more frequently they are opening themselves up to more opportunity

and that this will cause them to make more money. This is wrong; in fact, the main thing that high-frequency trading

does is cause you to become stressed, frustrated, and take low-probability trades.

The truth is that if you know what you’re trading edge is and you are 100% certain of how and when to trade it,

you will find that you don’t really need or want to trade that much.

The quickest way to improve your trading is to…

…Stop trading so much! It is just a fact of human nature that the more we stare at a price chart the more we get tempted to click our

mouse button and enter a trade. The fact that we worked extremely hard for the money in our trading account seems to go right out

the window after staring at a 5 minute chart for a while. We also tend to over-estimate our own capabilities of predicting the market’s

movement as well as ignore the real potential of losing the money we are about to risk.

More trades equal more time and more stress. We all know most traders lose money…most traders also trade a lot, so commonsense

dictates that simply trading less often (doing the opposite of most traders) will improve our returns over the long-run.

By knowing what your trading edge is and being 100% confident of how and when to trade it, you will find that it’s a lot easier to ignore the

market when your edge is not present. Not to mention that the higher-frequency trader is going to spend much more of his precious time in front

of the computer, probably stressed out and frustrated. I prefer to spend less time in the markets and I also prefer to have low levels of stress.

The point is this: rather than fighting against the market you are simply being patient and acting only when the market shows your edge.

This will work to accelerate your profits whilst spending less time in the markets. It’s sort of counter-intuitive , because in most professions

more time = more money, that’s not so in trading, in fact most traders do a lot better by spending less time in the markets.

The science of why people trade too much

Whilst the reasons why people trade too much can be many and varied, the primary reason is over-confidence. This is especially true

after a winning trade or a series of winning trades. Traders tend to become over-confident after they hit a nice winner or winners

and especially if they aren’t following a trading plan and are just trading off the ‘seat of their pants’. There is considerable scientific

research that backs up the claim that most traders trade too often due to over-confidence.

However, when they are successful, these investors irrationally attribute success disproportionately to their ability

rather than luck, leading investors to overestimate their own abilities and trade too aggressively; even investors with

more past failures than successes may become overconfident by over-weighting their successes.

Final thoughts…

Perhaps the core idea to take away from this lesson is that you should not assign too much significance to any one trade.

Meaning, don’t start over-trading just because you become overly-confident after hitting a few good winners.

You can do this by focusing on quality of trades rather than quantity of trades.

NOTE: The default settings in the EA are simply place holders. Before using the EA, please enter your own settings that work for you best.

Trade settings

Lots- This is the lot size for opening trades. If this value is greater than zero, then fixed lots will be used.
RiskPercentage- The percentage of free margin to risk in a trade. The Lots setting must be left as 0 to use this setting instead.
TakeProfit- The fixed take profit valuein points. If 0 then no take profit will be set.
StopLoss- The fixed stop loss value in points. If 0 then no stop loss will be set.
CloseOnReverseSignal- If set to 1 or true, then trades will be closed if a trade signal opposite the one that opened the trade appears.
WaitForCrossBarClose- A trade will only occur after the bar where the cross occured closes.
OneTradeAtAtime- If set to true, then only one trade will be opened at a time.
MaximumTrades- If this setting is greater than 0, then the EA will be limited to a maximum of this number of trades at any one time.

Settings for trailing stop;

AllowTrailingStop- This setting must be set to true if trailing stop is to activate.
TrailDistance- The trailing stop will be this distance in points away from the price.
TrailTrigger- The trailing stop will only start when the trade is at least this number of points in profit.
TrailStep- After the trailing is active, a new modification will only occur when there is at least a change of this points. This prevents too many trade modifications on every little price change and hence saves on memory usage.

FastEMA- FastEMA input for MACD.
SlowEMA- SlowEMA input for MACD .
MACDsma- Input for MACD.
AppliedPrice- MACD applied price.

Trading time range settings:

Enable_Time_Filter- Turn time filter on or off.
StartTimeGMT- Starting time for trading signals in GMT time.
EndTimeGMT- End time for trading signals in GMT time.

Magic number

MagicNumber- Magic number for the EA. Must be different on each attachment only if attached to multiple charts of the same currency pair. It helps the EA differentiate trades from different charts of the same pair.

MM_FixedIncrement: Init Lots, such as the initial capital of 5,000 US dollars, I usually set the initial position as lots=0.1. You can adjust accordingly according to your initial capital.

You can try to specify how to manage your money according to your risk tolerance.

4. Other instructions

The first development of the strategy was based on data from 2015.01.01-2022.01.01. This strategy has been tested out-of-sample. Over time, Strategy will undergo regular maintenance.

Trend Re-entry

In this case you would plan your buy entries above the green dotted box (make sure to set the Buy / Sell Retracement Floor=30). The SL should be placed below the immediate low. Sell when the red dotted box appears below the red separator and place the SL above the previous high. You can also use any other indicator or Fibonacci for your re-entry.

If you use Fibonacci, 100% retracement should be on the red /green separator line. If you want to open sells using fibo wait for the price to hit 50% mark, and then draw a rectangle between 61.8 and 38.2 lines. Go short if the price falls below the rectangle and place SL above the rectangle. Same logic applies when opening buys but your base line is the greed separator.

Trend Exhaustion

Alternatively if you want to know when the trend is almost coming to exhaustion, set the Buy / Sell Retracement Floor=80 to 95. Price will most likely retreat after pushing higher above the green dotted box or below the red dotted box.

Takeprofit: TP for each trade in points.
Takeprofit increase: This value is the amount (in points) that will be added to the TP of the next trade if the previous trade was a loss.
Stoploss: SL for each trade in points.
Stoploss increase: This value is the amount (in points) that will be added to the SL of the next trade if the previous trade was a loss.

Strategy Setting
Strategy: two price action strategies that you can choose
Continuous trading: the option to immediately open a reverse position after the losing previous position.
Candles to check: number of previous candles to be checked for the strategy.

Money Management
Lot Size Type: lot size calculation method.
Fixed Lot size: lot size for fixed lot method.
Auto lot size micro-lot value: ea will calculate lot size by dividing the account balance by this value, for example, if this value is 1000 and the account balance is 5000, the auto lot size will be 0.05.
Lot Multiplier: lot multiplier for trades after a losing trade.

Slippage: slippage of each trade.
Magic Number: magic number of the ea.

Time Management
Start trading after (hour): hour of the day to start trading.
Start trading after (minute): the minute of the starting hour.
