Q2 product revenue was $3.17 million and service revenue $1.83 million. Recurring product and service revenue was $3.59 million, or 71.8% of total revenue, versus $2.50 million, or 64.8%, a year earlier. Six-month recurring revenue was $6.85 million, up 32.7%.

At June 30, the company had $28.68 million in cash and equivalents, $77.39 million in short-term investments and $7.25 million in long-term investments. Management reported $113.6 million including restricted cash. Total assets were $160.9 million, total liabilities $21.3 million, and stockholders’ equity $139.6 million. The filing reports no conventional borrowings; liabilities include lease obligations, with operating and financing lease liabilities of approximately $7.46 million combined.

Changes and operating performance

  • Q2 revenue grew 29.6%; six-month revenue grew 25.1%. Management attributed product growth mainly to greater consumables shipments from a larger base of validated systems and higher consumable revenue per system; service-contract revenue also increased.
  • Q2 product costs rose 44.9%, faster than product revenue. Temporary manufacturing-line downtime and reduced consumables production efficiency added about $1.1 million of costs in the quarter; management cited approximately $1.0 million for the six-month period.
  • Q2 operating loss widened by $1.0 million. Higher revenue and increased interest income did not prevent a larger net loss, partly because the prior-year quarter included a $0.6 million German tax benefit.
  • Cash used in operations declined by $5.9 million year over year for the first half, which the company attributed mainly to payment timing, higher receivable collections and lower inventory purchases. Investing activities provided $27.4 million, principally reflecting investment maturities; this is not operating cash generation.
  • Two systems were placed and three validated in Q2, unchanged from the year-earlier quarter. For the first half, five systems were placed versus four, while five were validated versus 12. Cumulative placements reached 130 and cumulative validated systems 108.

Outlook, risks and notable items

Management expects continued significant operating losses and says cash, cash equivalents and investments should fund operating and capital needs for at least 12 months after the financial statements were issued. This is an estimate based on assumptions that may prove incorrect; management states future funding may require equity or debt financing and that insufficient capital could force delays, reductions or cessation of plans. The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance.

Management plans continued commercial, manufacturing, service and product-development investment. It notes that placements, customer-site access, validation timelines, budget cycles and seasonality can make results fluctuate; customer validation typically takes three to nine months, with utilization ramping afterward. Inflation, higher rates and financial-market or banking-system disruption could raise costs, reduce demand or impair access to funds. The company also disclosed customer concentration: one customer represented 20.6% of Q2 revenue, and two customers together represented 44.2% of receivables at quarter-end.

The 2022 restructuring reduced the workforce by approximately 20%; no related payments remained at June 30, 2023. No material litigation or contingency reserves were reported. A $0.6 million minimum commitment for software and cloud-hosting services extends through January 2026. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective, with no material change in internal control over financial reporting reported during the quarter.

Investor verification priorities

  • Track whether recurring-revenue growth and the installed/validated system base translate into improving gross margins and reduced manufacturing inefficiency.
  • Assess cash burn against the stated 12-month liquidity horizon, including investment maturities, capital spending and any future financing needs.
  • Monitor system placements, validations, customer adoption and revenue concentration, given the uneven placement and validation trends and customer reliance.
  • Review the effect of inflation, interest rates, banking-system conditions and customer site or validation delays on demand, costs and liquidity.
