Material changes versus the prior-year quarter
- Sales mix shifted: consumer revenue fell to $6.1 million from $10.3 million, while enterprise revenue rose to $8.6 million from $4.4 million, primarily on industrial IoT and enterprise Wi-Fi products. Automotive revenue was $2.8 million versus $2.7 million.
- Sales were nearly flat despite those market shifts. China revenue declined to $6.5 million from $9.9 million; North America revenue increased to $10.5 million from $6.7 million.
- Gross margin improved, partly because Q1 2021 included a one-time NimbeLink inventory step-up amortization charge. Q1 2022 included higher inventory and warranty reserves.
- Research and development expense rose 19.8% and sales and marketing expense rose 17.1%, primarily due to personnel-related costs; general and administrative expense declined 4.1%.
- Net results swung to a loss. The prior-year period included a $2.117 million income tax benefit, primarily related to a valuation-allowance release associated with the NimbeLink acquisition; Q1 2022 recorded an $0.085 million tax provision.
Outlook, commentary, risks and unusual items
- Management gave no quantified revenue or earnings guidance. It said available cash and expected operating cash flows should be sufficient for working-capital needs for at least the next 12 months, while planning continued investment in sales, engineering, capital expenditures, and product development.
- Management cited COVID-related disruptions and global supply shortages affecting customer products and component availability. It noted signs of a consumer-market rebound but said that rebound could be adversely affected by continued pandemic impacts.
- In February 2022, Airgain began moving Arizona in-house manufacturing to external contract manufacturers and shutting the facility, which produced certain aftermarket fleet and AirgainConnect products. It accrued $10,500 in severance and expected no lease-exit costs because the lease expired in April 2022.
- A potential product warranty claim identified in January led to an approximately $109,000 reserve; the total warranty reserve was $205,000 at quarter-end. The excess and obsolete inventory reserve increased to $224,000 from $47,000 at year-end.
- The $8.0 million NimbeLink contingent consideration and $0.6 million deferred payment were paid in April 2022, after quarter-end. This is a significant subsequent cash use relative to reported cash.
- Customer concentration remained meaningful: four customers each represented at least 10% of Q1 sales, collectively about 56%. Products were manufactured by five contract manufacturers, with operations across several regions.
- The company reported no material change to its stated risk factors, no material legal proceeding outcome expected, and effective disclosure controls. It reported no off-balance-sheet arrangements likely to have a material effect.
Investor facts to verify
- Confirm the timing and cash impact of the April payment of NimbeLink acquisition obligations and the resulting liquidity position.
- Track whether consumer sales recover and whether enterprise growth, including NimbeLink products, persists; monitor customer and market concentration.
- Assess supply availability, contract-manufacturer execution following the Arizona shutdown, and any related cost, quality, or delivery effects.
- Monitor gross margin, inventory and warranty reserves, and the pace of operating-expense growth relative to revenue.
- Review availability and covenant terms of the receivables-based credit facility, along with lease obligations and other commitments.
