Fiscal Q4 revenue was $87.5 million versus $68.0 million in the comparable prior-year quarter; net income was $18.4 million versus $5.1 million.

At year-end, cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled $405.4 million, up from $307.9 million. Working capital was $414.1 million. Total liabilities were $57.6 million; the filing reports no borrowings or other debt balance. Investing activities used $45.7 million, substantially reflecting purchases of marketable securities. The company repurchased 405,089 shares for $20.2 million during the year. It stated existing cash and expected operating cash generation should cover anticipated needs for at least 12 months.

Changes versus the prior comparable period

  • Revenue declined 1.9% year over year. Weakness in wearable sports cameras, professional IP security cameras and China automotive aftermarket demand was partly offset by growth in home security and monitoring, UAVs and non-sports wearables.
  • Operating income fell 28.7%, as higher research and development and selling, general and administrative expenses outweighed lower cost of revenue. R&D expense rose 22.0% to $101.2 million; stock-based compensation increased substantially.
  • Gross margin increased to 66.1% from 64.9%. Management attributed approximately 1 percentage point of FY2017 gross margin to recovery and sale of previously written-down inventory, as well as favorable product mix.
  • Operating cash flow decreased to $113.3 million, reflecting lower net income, inventory purchases and lower deferred revenue, partly offset by payment timing with suppliers.

Outlook, commentary and key risks

  • Management anticipated FY2018 revenue to be relatively flat versus FY2017. It expected high GoPro inventory to weigh on wearable sports-camera revenue in the first half of FY2018, and a competing chip in at least one GoPro mainstream camera to significantly hurt revenue in the second half and beyond.
  • Management expected gross margin to decline over the next 12 months as consumer and professional IP security products represented a larger share of sales and wearable sports-camera revenue declined. It also expected R&D and SG&A spending to rise in absolute dollars.
  • Customer and channel concentration is significant: Wintech accounted for about 60% of FY2017 revenue, while direct GoPro shipments were about 19%; shipments to GoPro’s ODMs were estimated to add about 5%. The five largest ODM/OEM customers collectively represented about 56% of revenue. Sales through Wintech are a concentration and distribution risk.
  • Other material exposures include short-notice order cancellations and demand forecasting, reliance on third-party foundries and assembly/test suppliers without long-term capacity guarantees, competition and pricing pressure, short camera-product life cycles, and execution risk in advanced process nodes and new markets.
  • A Sony image-sensor supply disruption after the April 2016 Japan earthquake affected customers’ camera production and Ambarella demand in FY2017 Q2 and Q3; management said the effect was immaterial by Q4 and was not expected to continue into FY2018.
  • The company reported no material legal proceedings. The independent auditor gave an unqualified opinion and reported effective internal control over financial reporting as of January 31, 2017.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether GoPro inventory normalization and its use of a competing chip produce the anticipated FY2018 revenue impact.
  • Whether growth in security, UAV, automotive and other camera markets can offset weakness in wearable sports cameras and the declining infrastructure business.
  • Whether gross margin can remain resilient after the approximately $2.9 million inventory recovery benefit and amid anticipated product-mix changes and pricing pressure.
  • How much revenue concentration remains with Wintech, GoPro and the largest ODM/OEM customers, and whether alternative channels can mitigate any disruption.
  • Whether rising R&D costs, stock-based compensation and share dilution are matched by successful product launches and commercial design wins.
  • Tax exposure: the filing reports $38.0 million of unrecognized tax benefits, of which $30.1 million would affect the effective tax rate if recognized; review tax-audit developments and deferred tax asset realizability.
