Q3 revenue increased 12.8% year over year, driven by stronger substrate and raw-material demand, favorable product mix, improved wireless-device demand stability and additional raw-wafer orders. Nine-month revenue declined 4.2%, primarily because of weaker substrate demand, particularly in wireless devices.
Gross-margin improvement reflected product mix, higher volume and cost-saving activities. Selling, general and administrative expense declined 18.5% in Q3 and 14.5% for the nine-month period, while research and development expense increased 51.4% in Q3 and 11.2% year to date.
At September 30, 2014, cash and cash equivalents were $25.8 million, short-term investments were $15.4 million and long-term investments were $7.3 million, totaling $48.5 million. Approximately $8.6 million was held by consolidated joint ventures and was not immediately available for U.S. use without taxes. Current assets were $104.8 million versus current liabilities of $16.3 million.
The company had no borrowings under its $10.0 million secured line of credit. Liabilities included $1.9 million of long-term royalty payments and $0.3 million of other long-term liabilities. Total contractual obligations were $3.4 million, including $0.7 million of operating leases and $2.7 million under the royalty agreement.

Guidance, outlook, commentary, risks and unusual items
Management stated that existing cash and investments are adequate to meet needs for the next 12 months. The filing does not provide a clear numerical revenue or earnings forecast. Management delayed participation in a proposed second China manufacturing facility because of volatility in the substrate business and did not expect the project to proceed.
Q3 other expense included $0.6 million of foreign-exchange losses, partially offset by a gain from selling IntelliEpi shares. For the nine months, the company recognized a $0.6 million gain on investment sales, primarily from IntelliEpi, and held an approximately $1.4 million unrealized gain on remaining IntelliEpi shares.
On October 27, 2014, after quarter-end, the board approved a stock-repurchase program of up to $5.0 million. The company also appointed Gary L. Fischer as CFO and corporate secretary effective August 11, 2014.
Key risks include semiconductor-industry cyclicality, customer order delays or cancellations, pricing pressure, underutilized China manufacturing capacity, product-quality and yield issues, customer and supplier concentration, foreign-exchange exposure, China regulatory and operating risks, reliance on joint ventures and limited-source suppliers, potential inventory impairment, and possible Nasdaq bid-price compliance issues. The company reported no material legal proceedings, no material purchase obligations, no off-balance-sheet financing arrangements and effective disclosure controls as of September 30, 2014.
