Gross margin fell principally because of higher component and freight costs from supply constraints, with a smaller contribution from revenue mix, including logistics projects. SG&A rose 12% and research, development, and engineering expense rose 6%, primarily reflecting additional headcount and related costs. The effective tax rate was 23%, versus 11%; Q1 2021 benefited from a $5.2 million discrete tax benefit. Q1 2022 included several discrete tax charges. Excluding discrete items, the respective rates were 16% and 18%.

At April 3, 2022, cash and investments totaled $794.2 million, down from $907.4 million at December 31, 2021. Cash and cash equivalents were $165.8 million. Cognex reported no long-term debt. Current assets were $672.9 million and current liabilities $195.1 million. Cash declined $20.4 million during the quarter; financing cash outflow of $138.1 million included $130.4 million in share repurchases and $11.3 million in dividends. Investing activities provided $69.2 million, mainly from net investment maturities and sales.

Material changes and management commentary

  • Revenue growth came from logistics and from automotive, semiconductor, consumer electronics, and medical-related industries. Management also said Q1 benefited from orders delayed from Q4 2021 as product supply improved.
  • Revenue increased across all reported geographic areas: Americas 17%, Europe 10% reported (17% excluding currency effects), Greater China 27%, and other Asia 24% reported (30% excluding currency effects).
  • Inventory rose to $136.7 million from $113.1 million at year-end. Management attributed this to higher business levels and strategic component purchases to address supply constraints; it expected inventory to keep increasing during the remainder of 2022.
  • Available-for-sale investments had $21.5 million of gross unrealized losses at quarter-end. The company recorded a $13.5 million after-tax net unrealized investment loss in other comprehensive income; it reported no credit-loss allowance for these securities.
  • Cognex repurchased 1.879 million shares for $130.4 million. The $200 million repurchase authorization was completed, and a new $500 million program had $486.6 million remaining at quarter-end. The quarterly dividend was $0.065 per share.

Outlook, risks, and contingencies

Management expected Q2 2022 revenue to be relatively consistent with or slightly below Q1. It expected stronger consumer-electronics revenue to be offset by logistics project timing and slower spending in the broader factory-automation market. It forecast Q2 gross margin in the low-70% range, citing continued elevated inventory purchase prices. Management stated that cash, investments, and operating cash flow should meet requirements for the next twelve months.

Key risks identified include component availability and supplier dependence, supply-chain disruption and inflation, demand forecasting and customer/order timing, logistics-industry customer concentration, COVID-19 impacts, competition and product obsolescence, cybersecurity and intellectual property, foreign exchange, international and geopolitical conditions including the war in Ukraine, tax exposures, and litigation. Outstanding inventory purchase orders were $89.0 million, some subject to cancellation penalties; Cognex may also have obligations for certain preauthorized components purchased by its contract manufacturer. Routine legal matters were not expected by management to have a material adverse effect. The company expected an IRS audit-related reserve release in Q2 or Q3 2022, reducing tax expense by approximately $2.4 million.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether elevated component and freight costs persist and how they affect gross margin and inventory levels.
  • Whether Q2 revenue and low-70% gross-margin expectations were achieved, particularly given logistics project timing and softer factory-automation spending.
  • Whether operating cash flow recovers as receivables and inventory investments evolve.
  • How the new $500 million repurchase authorization is used relative to cash needs and shareholder returns.
  • The timing and actual tax impact of the anticipated IRS reserve release, and the status of open tax examinations.
