Financial performance and liquidity

Operating income$32.2 million$24.4 million
Net income attributable to Euronet$7.2 million$16.0 million
Diluted EPS$0.13$0.30

Revenue increased 12% year over year; operating income rose 32%, lifting operating margin to about 8.1% from 6.9%. Net income attributable to Euronet fell 55%, mainly reflecting a $13.0 million foreign-exchange loss, higher interest expense following the 2014 convertible-note issuance, and higher income tax expense. The effective tax rate was 49.5%, versus 26.4%; management said it was materially affected by foreign-exchange losses and was 26.3% excluding those losses and their related tax effect.

Q1 investing cash outflow was $14.8 million, primarily capital expenditures; financing cash outflow was $4.4 million. Cash increased by $12.7 million during the quarter, after a $22.6 million adverse currency translation effect on cash. Working capital was $268.0 million and the current ratio was 1.35. Of period-end cash, $345.5 million was held outside the U.S. and expected to remain invested in foreign operations.

Total debt obligations were $427.5 million, including $340.4 million carrying value of convertible notes; capital leases were $5.4 million. The company reported $5.6 million drawn on its revolving facility and $552.9 million available, net of outstanding letters of credit. The $402.5 million principal amount of convertible notes bears a 1.5% coupon and is due 2044, subject to specified holder put rights.

Material changes versus the prior period

  • Money Transfer revenue rose 54% to $144.8 million and operating income increased to $13.8 million from $3.9 million. Growth reflected higher transaction volumes, the Walmart product launch and the HiFX acquisition; money transfer transactions increased 58%.
  • epay revenue declined 5% to $175.9 million, but operating income increased 5% to $15.6 million. The revenue decline reflected currency translation, fewer prepaid mobile transactions in Brazil and the U.K., and lower U.S. rates; total transactions rose 14%.
  • EFT Processing revenue was essentially flat at $74.7 million, while operating income declined 11% to $11.4 million. Currency translation and lower rates on certain outsourcing services offset growth in managed ATMs and dynamic currency conversion.
  • Net foreign-currency translation losses were $55.3 million, compared with a $3.2 million gain in Q1 2014, reducing comprehensive income attributable to Euronet to a loss of $48.0 million.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

Management estimated 2015 capital expenditures of approximately $55 million to $65 million. It expected operating cash generation, cash on hand and available credit to cover debt, lease and capital spending needs, while cautioning that additional financing might be needed if resources prove insufficient. No earnings guidance was provided in the filing.

Key risks include substantial foreign-currency exposure: about 70% of revenue was generated outside the U.S. Management estimated that a 10% currency movement could affect annualized reported net income and working capital by approximately $50 million to $55 million, and total comprehensive income by approximately $60 million to $65 million through translation of non-U.S. assets and liabilities. Other cited risks include competition, contract renewal and pricing, regulation and licensing, cybersecurity and fraud, agent or correspondent performance, and access to banking relationships.

The company disclosed $73.9 million of standby letters of credit and bank guarantees, plus guarantees and indemnification commitments; it reported no significant claims or related liabilities. A Delaware unclaimed-property review covering 1996–2007 remains unresolved, though management did not expect a material adverse effect. Management reported no other legal or regulatory proceedings believed likely to have a material adverse effect, and no material change in previously disclosed risk factors.
