Gross-margin improvement reflected lower internally manufactured component costs, manufacturing efficiency and product mix, partly offset by lower selling prices. Operating expenses rose to $245.8 million from $187.9 million, including foreign-exchange losses of $14.5 million versus $4.5 million.
Fourth-quarter revenue was $361.1 million versus $280.1 million in Q4 2016; gross profit was $208.8 million versus $155.3 million. Net income attributable to IPG fell to $53.0 million from $75.1 million, and diluted EPS to $0.96 from $1.39, primarily reflecting the Tax Act-related charge.

- Inventory increased to $307.7 million from $239.0 million, and accounts receivable rose to $237.3 million from $155.9 million, using cash as the business expanded.
Material changes and notable items
- Materials-processing sales increased 41.4% to $1,332.6 million; high-power CW laser sales grew 49.9% to $867.5 million. China represented 44.1% of sales, up from 35.7% in 2016.
- The largest customer, Han’s Laser, generated 13% of sales, compared with 9% in 2016. The five largest customers together accounted for 28%, up from 22%.
- IPG acquired Innovative Laser Technologies, OptiGrate and Laser Depth Dynamics in 2017. Acquisition cash outlays totaled $60.5 million, net of cash acquired.
- The Tax Act resulted in a provisional $49.4 million discrete tax expense, including $47.0 million federal transition tax and $1.1 million state tax, plus a $1.3 million deferred-tax-asset reduction. The transition tax is payable over eight years. The reported effective tax rate rose to 37.0% from 28.9%.
- Backlog was approximately $743.6 million at year-end versus $413.9 million a year earlier. It included $417.4 million of frame agreements, which are nonbinding; orders are generally cancelable. Management expected to ship a substantial majority during 2018.
Outlook, risks and contingencies
IPG gave no specific revenue or earnings guidance. It expected 2018 capital expenditures, excluding acquisitions, of approximately $170–$190 million and anticipated continued increases in research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative spending. Management said the U.S. federal tax-rate reduction was expected to lower the 2018 consolidated effective tax rate by about four percentage points versus the rate absent the change.
Key risks include cyclical customer capital spending and intense competition and price pressure; high fixed costs, substantial inventory and capacity expansion; dependence on China and a limited number of large customers; foreign-exchange exposure and operations in Russia subject to changing trade controls and sanctions; reliance on specialized, sometimes single-site manufacturing and limited-source suppliers; and product adoption, execution and acquisition-integration risks. A patent-infringement action filed in 2015 remained disclosed; the filing did not identify it as a material financial-statement contingency. Management reported no ongoing legal proceedings it estimated would materially affect the financial statements. The company reported effective disclosure controls and internal control over financial reporting, with an unqualified auditor opinion.
Investor verification points
- Assess how much of the record backlog converts to firm, shipped revenue, particularly the nonbinding frame-agreement portion.
- Monitor China sales and customer concentration, including Han’s Laser, and the impact of any regional slowdown or trade restrictions.
- Separate underlying tax performance from the one-time Tax Act transition charge; verify final transition-tax accounting and any decision on repatriating foreign earnings.
- Track inventory, receivables and operating cash conversion against rapid sales growth, alongside the planned increase in capital spending.
- Review acquisition integration and returns, competitive pricing and gross-margin durability, foreign-exchange effects, and developments in the disclosed patent litigation.
