Net cash used in investing activities was $17.5 million, principally capital spending of $16.2 million. Financing used $117.2 million, including $95.1 million of share repurchases and $24.2 million of tax withholding on share settlements. Cash increased $102.1 million during the quarter. Working capital was $1,540.5 million, versus $1,555.1 million at March 31, 2023.

Logitech reported no borrowings under its uncommitted, unsecured credit lines; available lines and letters of credit totaled $172.0 million, with $9.2 million of bank guarantees outstanding. Management said cash, projected operating cash flow and available resources should fund operations for at least 12 months.

Material changes and operating performance

Sales declined 16% year over year, or 15% at constant currency, reflecting weaker demand across most categories. By region, sales fell 11% in the Americas, 11% in EMEA and 26% in Asia Pacific (24% at constant currency). By product category, tablet accessories grew 6%; the largest declines were Other (-35%), webcams (-31%), video collaboration (-23%), keyboards and combos (-21%), headsets (-20%), gaming (-11%) and pointing devices (-5%).

Gross margin fell primarily because of unfavorable currency effects and product mix, partly offset by lower material costs and less expedited shipping. Operating expenses decreased to $297.2 million from $344.1 million, mainly due to reduced marketing and advertising spending and lower personnel costs; expenses rose to 30.5% of sales from 29.7% as sales contracted. Interest income increased to $9.8 million from $1.4 million as interest rates rose. Other expense, net, was $13.0 million, including a $9.6 million impairment/write-off of a note receivable; the prior-year period reported $5.6 million of other income, including investment gains.

Operating cash flow benefited from lower receivables and inventory and other working-capital movements. Inventory was $572.3 million at June 30, down from $682.9 million at March 31, 2023; inventory turnover was 4.2x versus 3.1x in the comparable quarter last year.

Outlook, risks and unusual items

  • Management expects current challenges to continue in the near term: macroeconomic uncertainty, inflation, currency volatility, low consumer confidence, reduced enterprise spending, and uncertainty around return-to-office demand. No quantified sales or earnings guidance is provided in the filing.
  • The company identifies hybrid work, video collaboration, social gaming and digital content creation as longer-term growth opportunities. It is reducing operating costs, aligning inventory with demand, investing in business-to-business direct sales and launching products.
  • Restructuring charges were $3.5 million in the quarter. The company expects to substantially complete the restructuring within nine months; $7.9 million remained accrued at quarter-end.
  • At June 30, non-cancelable inventory purchase commitments were $357.3 million, mostly expected to be fulfilled within 12 months. The company accrued $39.5 million for firm inventory commitments exceeding anticipated demand or net realizable value.
  • Foreign exchange is a material exposure: about 48% of quarterly sales were in currencies other than the U.S. dollar. A hypothetical adverse 10% currency move applied to monetary assets and liabilities would have reduced pre-tax income by an estimated $10.4 million after hedges.
  • Logitech had several ordinary-course legal claims and a small number of proceedings. It does not currently expect their resolution to materially affect its financial condition, cash flows or results, but notes litigation uncertainties. It also disclosed risks from tax-law changes, share repurchases and dividends, and use of artificial intelligence.
  • A new three-year share repurchase program of up to $1.0 billion was approved by the Swiss Takeover Board after quarter-end and became effective July 28, 2023. The prior program expired July 27, 2023. The board recommended a fiscal 2023 dividend of CHF 1.06 per share, subject to shareholder approval.
  • Product-category presentation changed this quarter, including creation of a Headsets category and reclassification of certain sales; comparative categories were recast, with no effect on total prior-period sales.

Important facts for investors to verify

  1. Whether demand stabilizes, especially in video collaboration, webcams and Asia Pacific, and how return-to-office trends affect enterprise sales.
  2. Whether gross margin recovers from currency and product-mix pressure, and whether cost reductions can offset weaker revenue without impairing innovation.
  3. Inventory quality and the adequacy of the $39.5 million purchase-commitment accrual, given $357.3 million of remaining non-cancelable inventory commitments.
  4. The nature and potential follow-on effects of the $9.6 million note-receivable impairment, and the status of restructuring costs and completion timeline.
  5. Cash generation and capital returns, including actual repurchases under the new authorization, the dividend approval and the effect of distributions on liquidity.
  6. Tax exposures, foreign-exchange sensitivity and developments in the disclosed legal proceedings; management states that estimates and outcomes may change.
