Financial position and cash flow

  • Cash and cash equivalents were $597.0 million at quarter-end, versus $604.5 million at March 31, 2019. Working capital was $648.3 million.
  • Total assets were $2.09 billion and total liabilities were $889.7 million. The company reported no bank borrowings; it had $79.3 million of uncommitted, unsecured credit lines, with $15.7 million of bank guarantees outstanding.
  • Operating cash flow was $36.5 million; investing cash use was $9.5 million, principally $9.3 million of capital expenditures; financing cash use was $34.1 million, including $15.1 million of share repurchases and $19.4 million of tax withholding on net share settlements. Cash decreased $7.6 million overall.
  • Current assets were $1.38 billion and current liabilities $733.4 million. Accounts receivable was $418.8 million and inventory $297.0 million at June 30.

Material changes and operating trends

  • Regional sales rose 6% in the Americas and 12% in EMEA; Asia Pacific was flat. Constant-currency growth was 7%, 17% and 5%, respectively.
  • Growth was strongest in Mobile Speakers (+47%), Video Collaboration (+25%), Tablet & Other Accessories (+18%) and Audio & Wearables (+12%). Pointing Devices and PC Webcams each declined 5%; Gaming declined 1%; Keyboards & Combos were flat.
  • Gross margin improved 30 basis points, helped by product-cost savings, tariff mitigation and mix, partly offset by higher China tariffs and unfavorable currency effects.
  • Operating expenses were essentially unchanged in dollars. Lower restructuring charges—$0.5 million versus $9.9 million—were a notable factor in the improvement in operating income. The restructuring plan was substantially complete; cumulative charges were $11.8 million.
  • Operating cash flow increased year over year, while the prior-year comparison included larger working-capital outflows. In the current quarter, receivables rose with sales timing and customer payments; accrued liabilities declined primarily due to annual bonus payments.

Outlook, risks and unusual items

  • No specific revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the filing. Management said cash balances, historical cash generation and operational projections should provide sufficient liquidity for at least the next 12 months.
  • The board recommended a CHF 121.8 million cash dividend for fiscal 2020, subject to shareholder approval. The $250 million three-year buyback program had $172.4 million remaining at June 30.
  • Swiss tax reform was expected to take effect January 1, 2020, pending legislative procedures. Logitech anticipated higher Swiss cash tax payments beginning in fiscal 2020. The current quarter included a $2.3 million discrete tax provision, partly offset by $5.8 million of U.S. excess tax benefits and a $1.2 million benefit from reversal of uncertain tax positions. The prior-year quarter recorded a $5.2 million tax benefit, making the year-over-year tax comparison unusually favorable to the current period’s reported earnings growth.
  • Adoption of lease accounting on April 1, 2019 added $31.3 million of right-of-use assets and $37.4 million of lease liabilities at adoption, with no impact on earnings or cash flows. At June 30, lease liabilities totaled $38.2 million.
  • Key exposures include tariffs and trade restrictions, foreign exchange, intense competition and product-launch execution, demand forecasting and channel inventory, manufacturing concentration in China and Southeast Asia, and reliance on major customers. Two customers each represented more than 10% of gross sales; Amazon and Ingram Micro together accounted for over a quarter of gross sales, according to the risk disclosures.
  • Management reported several ordinary-course claims and a small number of legal proceedings, which it believes lack merit and does not expect to materially affect results; outcomes remain uncertain. Unrecognized tax benefits were $77.3 million at quarter-end.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether sales momentum in Video Collaboration, Mobile Speakers and other growth categories can offset declines or weak performance in traditional PC peripherals and sustain margins.
  • The realized effects of tariffs, currency movements and mitigation actions, including the filing’s estimate that an adverse 10% currency move would reduce pre-tax income by about $8.9 million after existing forward-contract offsets.
  • The timing and financial impact of Swiss tax reform, higher expected Swiss cash taxes and the $77.3 million balance of uncertain tax benefits.
  • Customer concentration, channel inventory and receivables collection trends; DSO rose to 59 days from 57 days year over year.
  • Cash use for dividends and buybacks, capital investment and lease obligations, and whether operating cash generation supports these commitments.
  • The effect of product launches, competition and supply-chain or manufacturing disruptions on demand, inventory, gross margin and the full-year outlook; quarterly results are not necessarily indicative of the fiscal year.
