Material changes and operating trends
- Revenue growth was led by subscriptions from direct sales customers. Q3 subscription revenue increased $97.6 million year over year, including an $88.4 million increase from direct sales customers. For nine months, subscription revenue rose $295.4 million, including a $270.5 million increase from that group.
- Atlas accounted for 66% of total Q3 revenue and 65% for the nine-month period, up from 63% and 62%, respectively, in the prior-year periods. Management said existing Atlas applications grew more slowly than historical rates amid macroeconomic conditions.
- Net losses narrowed substantially year over year, helped by revenue growth and higher interest income. Operating expenses nevertheless increased, particularly research and development.
- Operating cash flow improved to positive $66.9 million from negative $38.8 million. Management cited higher collections, while the $138.7 million decrease in deferred revenue was a significant offset.
- The company spent $15.0 million in cash to acquire Grainite, a stream-processing application company, in September 2023; the acquisition was intended to accelerate stream-processing development and was not material to the reported financial statements.
Outlook, risks, and contingencies
The filing provides no numerical financial guidance. Management expects existing cash and investments to fund operating and capital needs for at least the next 12 months, but also expects continued operating losses and says future operating cash flow could remain negative. Management expects macroeconomic headwinds to continue affecting growth in existing Atlas applications in the short term and through the remainder of the year. It also expects continued investment in sales and marketing, research and development, and business expansion.
Key risks include weaker customer usage, renewals or expansion; reduced IT spending and economic uncertainty; competition; dependence on Atlas and third-party cloud providers; service interruptions and cybersecurity incidents; and continued losses. The company also disclosed interest-rate-related unrealized losses on Treasury investments, without an allowance for credit losses. Realtime Data filed a petition for U.S. Supreme Court review after the Federal Circuit affirmed a lower-court ruling in MongoDB’s favor; management said it intends to defend the case and did not expect legal matters to have a material adverse effect as of October 31, 2023. Disclosure controls were concluded effective at the reasonable assurance level, with no material change in internal control over financial reporting reported for the quarter.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether Atlas usage growth, customer renewals and expansion sustain revenue growth despite the disclosed macroeconomic pressure.
- Whether gross-margin improvement continues as Atlas becomes a larger share of revenue, given cloud hosting costs and negative services gross margins.
- How operating cash flow develops, particularly in light of deferred-revenue movements and substantial stock-based compensation.
- Potential conversion, cash-settlement and dilution effects of the 2026 Notes during and after the disclosed conversion window, and the role of capped calls.
- Developments in the Supreme Court petition and other legal, cybersecurity, competition and regulatory risks.
