Commerce revenue grew 31.2% to $1.676 billion; fintech revenue grew 40.2% to $1.361 billion. Reported revenue growth by geography was strongest in Mexico (+62.4%), followed by Argentina (+39.2%), other countries (+28.1%) and Brazil (+26.1%). Revenue is substantially generated outside the United States.

Operating cash flow benefited from net income, noncash adjustments and a reduction in credit-card receivables, partly offset by a $242 million decrease in funds payable to customers. Investing cash flow included $421 million of net principal loan originations and $89 million of capital expenditures; investment purchases and maturities were each about $5.1 billion.

Financial position and liquidity

  • At March 31, cash and cash equivalents were $2.143 billion; restricted cash was $1.381 billion; short-term investments were $2.479 billion, including $1.409 billion held mainly for a Central Bank of Brazil guarantee. Management identified $3.213 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as its main liquidity source, excluding that guarantee investment.
  • Loans payable and other financial liabilities totaled $4.832 billion ($2.332 billion current); operating lease liabilities totaled $688 million. The company’s non-GAAP net debt was $2.107 billion, versus $2.139 billion at year-end 2022. The filing defines net debt using selected cash and investments and includes lease liabilities.
  • Total assets were $14.201 billion, total liabilities $12.161 billion and equity $2.040 billion. A $400 million revolving credit facility was undrawn.
  • Net loans receivable were $1.908 billion; the gross portfolio was $3.049 billion, with a $1.141 billion allowance shown against loan balances (the broader disclosed allowance, including commitments, was $1.154 billion). The credit portfolio increased 26% year over year. Management reported that 1–90-day non-performing loans improved to 9.5% from 13.4%.

Material changes and management commentary

  • Gross and operating margins improved year over year. Management attributed gross-margin improvement mainly to lower shipping operating costs, cost of goods sold and collection fees as a percentage of revenue. Higher fintech funding costs partly offset this.
  • Product and technology expense rose 62.8% to $381 million, including a 42% increase in related headcount. Sales and marketing expense increased 33.9% to $383 million. Doubtful-account provision was broadly flat at $252 million despite portfolio growth.
  • Interest income and other financial gains rose to $161 million from $31 million, while interest expense and other financial losses increased to $94 million from $56 million. Net foreign-currency losses were $87 million, including $56 million associated with share purchases in Argentina through mechanisms that reflect the cost of accessing U.S. dollars under local exchange restrictions.
  • Management said it maintained a cautious approach to loan originations, prioritizing lower-risk customers, and characterized the quarter as delivering record quarterly operating results and strong cash generation. It does not provide traditional earnings guidance, citing uncertainty and a long-term operating focus. It expects continued investment in technology and logistics.
  • Platform activity grew: unique active users were 101 million versus 81 million; gross merchandise volume was $9.434 billion versus $7.665 billion; total payment volume was $36.986 billion versus $25.319 billion.

Risks, contingencies and unusual items

  • Foreign-exchange and inflation exposure is significant. Argentina was treated as highly inflationary, with quarterly inflation of 21.7%; its official peso exchange rate depreciated 18.0% during the quarter. The reported 35.1% revenue growth compares with 58.4% FX-neutral growth; FX-neutral figures do not adjust for local inflation or other macroeconomic effects.
  • Credit performance, funding costs and loan-loss assumptions are key sensitivities. A hypothetical 10% increase in interest rates would have increased reported loans payable and other financial liabilities by approximately $95 million, according to the filing’s sensitivity analysis.
  • Accrued estimated liabilities for probable legal matters were $62 million. Additional reasonably possible legal actions were estimated at up to $402 million, for which no loss was accrued. The buyer protection program had estimated maximum potential exposure of $4.010 billion and a recorded provision of $8 million; management says maximum exposure is not representative of likely losses.
  • Commitments include cloud-service contracts, operating and finance lease payments of $973 million and $64 million, respectively, and a 10-year Brazilian air-logistics agreement with an annual minimum cost of $43 million once all dedicated aircraft are operating. Three of six aircraft had begun operations by quarter-end.
  • A new share-repurchase authorization of up to $900 million was approved in February 2023, expiring March 31, 2024; $783 million remained available at quarter-end. Q1 repurchases totaled $61 million.
  • Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting. It stated that risk factors had not materially changed from the 2022 Form 10-K.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether reported growth and margins remain durable after separating currency translation, Argentine inflation and one-time or market-sensitive financial gains and losses.
  • Whether loan growth, delinquency trends, charge-offs and the allowance remain appropriate as the credit portfolio expands; review the company’s credit-quality definitions and subsequent-period disclosures.
  • How liquidity and funding needs evolve, including restricted balances, customer funds payable, securitization activity, variable-rate debt and the composition of net debt.
  • The status and possible financial impact of the reasonably possible legal claims, tax disputes and buyer-protection obligations.
  • Actual capital spending, cloud and logistics commitments, share repurchases and the company’s progress against its long-term investment priorities; the filing provides no traditional earnings guidance.
