Changes and notable items
- Higher freight earnings drove revenue, operating income, and attributable net income growth. First-half TCE rate was $26,803 per day versus $18,802.
- Higher bunker prices increased voyage costs: bunker costs consumed rose 94.8% in Q2 and 80% for the first half year over year. Charter hire and vessel operating expenses also increased.
- Q2 other expense included a $3.5 million unrealized derivative loss, compared with a $6.3 million gain in Q2 2021. For the first half, derivative instruments produced a $4.0 million unrealized gain, below the $8.3 million gain in 2021.

Outlook, risks, and contingencies
Management said that, if dry-bulk rates do not decline significantly from current levels, available capital resources and expected cash generation should be sufficient to fund operations for at least the next 12 months. This is conditional, not formal earnings guidance. Management expects continued operating volatility due to freight-market cycles, vessel supply and cargo demand, competition, and seasonality. Fuel and freight-rate movements can also cause period-to-period derivative mark-to-market volatility.
Management reported compliance with applicable debt covenants at June 30, 2022. The company cites future drydocking and ballast-water-treatment costs, estimated at approximately $0.5 million to $0.7 million per vessel, as capital needs; timing and total costs are uncertain. Ordinary-course claims and litigation are disclosed, with management not expecting a material financial impact. No off-balance-sheet arrangements were reported. Disclosure controls were deemed effective, and no material change in internal control was reported.
Subsequent events: a loan’s interest rate was fixed at 5.45% effective July 15, 2022. On August 5, the board declared a $0.075-per-share quarterly dividend, payable September 15 to shareholders of record September 1.
Investor verification points
- Assess whether freight rates and TCE performance can hold up, and how a market downturn would affect the company’s conditional 12-month liquidity assessment.
- Review bunker-price exposure, charter-in commitments, and derivative positions; unrealized gains and losses can meaningfully affect reported earnings.
- Evaluate total fixed obligations, including secured debt, finance leases, vessel purchase options, and upcoming maturities and repayments.
- Check the sustainability and cash coverage of dividends alongside drydocking, vessel upgrades, and ballast-water-treatment spending.
- Compare GAAP results with Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure whose definition may differ from other companies’ measures.
