- Operating and selling, general and administrative expenses increased 10% for the quarter and 11% for the six months. Other expenses increased 25% and 24%, respectively, primarily because of the new PEO health offering and continued investments in product development and technology.
- Compensation-related expenses increased 6% for the quarter and 7% for the six months, reflecting higher medical costs, sales headcount, and performance-based compensation.

Guidance, Outlook, Commentary, Risks, and Unusual Items
Management stated that fiscal 2015 guidance was unchanged. Expected growth ranges are 3%–5% for payroll service revenue, 16%–19% for HRS revenue, 8%–10% for total service revenue, and 6%–8% for net income. Capital expenditures are expected to be $110 million–$120 million, depreciation expense $95 million–$100 million, and intangible amortization slightly below $15 million.
Management highlighted the launch of Paychex Flex, a cloud-based workforce management platform incorporating payroll, human resources, benefits, retirement, time and attendance, and mobile capabilities. The Company expects cash, corporate investments, and projected operating cash flows to fund operations, capital expenditures, share repurchases, and dividends for the foreseeable future.
Interest-rate conditions remain a significant factor. The combined investment portfolio earned an average rate of 1.1% in both periods. A 25-basis-point change in short-term interest rates is estimated to affect after-tax earnings by approximately $3.5 million to $4.0 million over the following 12 months. A hypothetical 25-basis-point increase in longer-term rates could reduce the fair value of available-for-sale securities by approximately $20 million to $25 million, with the effect generally recorded in equity unless impairment occurs.
The investment portfolio totaled $4.82 billion at fair value and consisted primarily of high-quality municipal bonds, variable-rate demand notes, and cash equivalents. The Company reported $1.4 million of unrealized losses on securities and believed the losses were not other-than-temporary.
Paychex had $900 million of unused uncommitted secured short-term lines of credit and a $750 million committed unsecured credit facility expiring June 21, 2018. No amounts were outstanding under these facilities at November 30, 2014. Standby letters of credit totaled $43.0 million, with no amounts drawn.
Key risks include changes in employment and wage levels, interest rates and investment values, demand and competition, regulation of payroll and employee benefits, workers’ compensation and health insurance claims, technology and cybersecurity failures, reliance on third-party providers, business continuity events, internal-control failures, client-related legal liabilities, and unfavorable legal outcomes. Workers’ compensation reserves are subject to actuarial and legal uncertainties. Management stated that current legal matters were not expected to have a material adverse effect, while acknowledging that ultimate outcomes could be material.
