The increase in cash was principally supported by financing: net cash provided by financing activities was $77.8 million, including $90.0 million of net revolver borrowings. Accounts receivable and inventory were $392.9 million and $384.5 million, respectively.
Total debt was $321.5 million, up from $235.3 million at December 31, 2023. The company had $307.4 million of available revolver capacity after letters of credit. It reported compliance with its credit agreement covenants. Management believes its credit agreement and internally generated funds should meet foreseeable cash requirements, while noting uncertainty around future credit availability. No material off-balance-sheet arrangements were reported.
Business and material changes
- Vegetation Management: Sales declined 13% to $223.7 million; operating income fell 41% to $21.7 million. Management cited weaker forestry, tree care, and agricultural mowing demand, lower production volumes, and resulting production inefficiencies. Segment backlog was down 48% year over year.
- Industrial Equipment: Sales rose 30% to $201.8 million; operating income increased 102% to $25.3 million. Excavators, vacuum trucks, and safety products contributed most to growth.
- Consolidated backlog was $831.3 million at quarter-end, down 16% from $994.8 million a year earlier. Consolidated gross profit declined despite higher sales, with a less favorable segment mix and weaker Vegetation Management production efficiency weighing on margins.
- SG&A increased to $60.6 million, mainly due to labor cost inflation. Interest expense rose to $6.1 million, primarily reflecting higher interest rates. Other income was $0.1 million versus $1.0 million in Q1 2023, which included a roughly $1.7 million gain on sale of a manufacturing facility.
Outlook, risks, and other matters
The company expects 2024 capital expenditures of approximately $35 million to $45 million. The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance. Management said industrial demand was strong, while forestry, tree care, and agricultural mowing demand had weakened. Supply-chain performance had broadly improved, but chassis frames, transmissions, and hydraulics continued to cause disruption.
Key risks cited include weaker economic or agricultural conditions, lower government customer budgets, continued supply-chain or labor constraints, input-cost increases, interest-rate and foreign-exchange movements, tariffs and trade disputes, geopolitical events, weather, and acquisition integration. A uniform 10% exchange-rate movement would change quarterly gross profit by an estimated $3.6 million; a two-percentage-point change in variable borrowing rates would change quarterly interest expense by approximately $1.6 million, based on current borrowings. Foreign-currency translation reduced equity by $7.3 million during the quarter.
The effective tax rate fell to 23% from 25%, largely due to a favorable Brazilian research-and-development tax settlement. The 2023 Royal Truck acquisition purchase-price allocation review was completed in Q1; its included operating results were described as immaterial. Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting. No material changes to previously disclosed risk factors were reported.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether the sharp decline in Vegetation Management orders and backlog continues, and how it affects segment margins and production efficiency.
- Whether Industrial Equipment growth and profitability are sustained, and how the company’s lower consolidated backlog develops.
- How cash conversion evolves: Q1 operating cash flow was only $1.1 million, while quarter-end cash rose substantially alongside increased revolver borrowing.
- Debt levels, variable-rate exposure, covenant compliance, and the timing and amount of planned debt repayments and capital spending.
- Whether remaining supply-chain constraints, foreign-exchange movements, and the Brazilian tax settlement have ongoing effects on results.
