HPMC external sales increased 13% to $529.9 million, with segment EBITDA increasing to $97.6 million and margin expanding to 18.4%. AA&S sales declined 10% to $513.0 million, while segment EBITDA declined to $71.8 million and margin decreased to 14.0%.
Cash and cash equivalents were $394.4 million at March 31, 2024, down from $743.9 million at December 31, 2023. The decrease primarily reflected negative operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and $150.0 million of share repurchases. Accounts receivable increased to $720.5 million and inventories increased to $1,284.9 million. Managed working capital increased to $1,498.7 million, or 35.9% of annualized sales, from 31.1% at year-end 2023.

The company had no borrowings under the revolving portion of its ABL facility, $31.7 million of letters of credit outstanding, and approximately $557 million of additional ABL liquidity.
Material Changes Versus the Prior Comparable Period
- Sales were broadly unchanged as aerospace, defense, medical, and electronics growth offset weaker energy demand.
- Gross margin and adjusted EBITDA margin improved despite outages, weather impacts, and higher startup costs.
- Interest expense increased to $26.6 million from $19.9 million, primarily due to the $425 million of 7.25% senior notes issued in August 2023.
- The effective tax rate increased to 19.8% from 4.7%, contributing to lower net income. The current-quarter rate included a $3.0 million discrete benefit related primarily to share-based compensation.
- Operating cash usage improved substantially from the prior year, which included a $50 million pension contribution, but working-capital investment remained significant.
- ATI repurchased 3.4 million shares for $150.0 million under its repurchase program, exhausting the authorization. Additional employee tax-withholding repurchases brought total shares purchased during the quarter to approximately 3.9 million.
- Confirmed backlog increased to $3.9 billion from $3.3 billion; approximately 70% of the March 31, 2024 backlog was expected to be fulfilled within 12 months.
Guidance, Outlook, Risks, and Unusual Items
Management expects continued profitable growth in HPMC, supported by aerospace demand, strong backlog, long-term aerospace agreements, investments in titanium capacity, and operational debottlenecking. HPMC is continuing its Richland, Washington titanium melt expansion. AA&S management expects margin expansion during 2024 as mix and operating performance improve, with early signs of industrial-market recovery potentially supporting operating leverage. ATI expects to ramp its Albany, Oregon titanium melt shop during the first half of fiscal 2024 and reach full production capacity in the second half.
The quarter included $2.9 million of startup costs and $0.2 million of restructuring charges. A restructuring reserve of $13.9 million remained at quarter-end, including $9.7 million expected to be paid within one year. Environmental remediation reserves were approximately $14 million, and reasonably possible costs could exceed recorded reserves by as much as $16 million.
Key risks include aerospace and industrial demand variability, energy and raw-material price volatility, equipment outages, labor disruptions, supply-chain and geopolitical risks, international trade policy, pension and environmental liabilities, litigation, and execution risks associated with capacity expansions. Natural-gas hedges covered approximately 70% of forecast domestic requirements for the remainder of 2024 and 35% for 2025. The $50 million interest-rate swap hedging part of the ABL term loan matures in June 2024.
ATI had approximately $28 million of deferred employee-retention tax credits, including $17 million with statutes of limitation expiring in 2024. The timing and ultimate recognition of these credits may be affected by potential legislation.
