Revenue growth was led by systems, up 44% in Q2 and 52% in the first half; services revenue rose 11% and 17%, respectively. Systems made up 95% of revenue in both 2021 periods. U.S. revenue was 79% of Q2 revenue and 81% of first-half revenue, down from 91% and 89% a year earlier. No customer represented more than 10% of 2021 revenue.
Management attributed higher gross margins primarily to favorable product and customer mix, growth in All Platform offerings, improved services mix, and a credit for previously paid U.S. import tariffs on products subsequently exported. Freight expense increased, including from greater air shipments and higher transportation prices. The 2020 comparison included $6.3 million of restructuring charges; none were recorded in the 2021 periods.
Balance sheet, cash flow, and liquidity
- At July 3, 2021, cash and cash equivalents were $58.6 million and marketable securities were $117.3 million, totaling $175.8 million. Cash and cash equivalents alone declined from $80.8 million at year-end 2020, while marketable securities increased from $53.0 million.
- Current assets were $350.6 million and current liabilities $117.5 million, implying working capital of approximately $233.0 million. Inventory rose to $77.1 million from $52.3 million, primarily to support growth and address supply constraints.
- First-half operating cash flow of $33.4 million included a $24.9 million inventory build and a $10.7 million increase in receivables. Investing cash use was $68.2 million, mainly net purchases of marketable securities; financing cash provided was $12.6 million, primarily from employee equity plans.
- No borrowings were outstanding under the $35.0 million revolving credit facility; the full amount was available. The facility is secured by substantially all assets, including intellectual property, and matures in January 2023.
- Total liabilities were $162.2 million. Contractual obligations totaled $198.1 million, including $165.8 million of purchase commitments, $17.2 million of operating lease payments, and $15.1 million of expected revenue-share payments.
Outlook, risks, and unusual items
- Management said existing cash, cash equivalents, marketable securities, and expected operating cash flows should fund anticipated needs for at least the next 12 months. The filing provides no numerical revenue or earnings guidance.
- Management expected to slightly increase sales and marketing investment as a percentage of revenue and to slightly increase R&D investment relative to systems gross profit; it expected G&A to decline as a percentage of revenue over time.
- COVID-19-related supply-chain constraints remained a central risk: component shortages, extended lead times, manufacturing and logistics disruptions, and higher freight costs could limit deliveries or pressure margins. One silicon supplier had extended lead times from 32 to 50 weeks and raised prices.
- Outstanding inventory purchase commitments and the risk of excess or obsolete components expose the company to working-capital and margin risk. The revenue-share arrangement requires payments tied to developed-product sales, subject to a $15.8 million aggregate limit; a true-up may be due if minimum payments are not met by March 2024.
- The company reported an accumulated deficit of $628.0 million despite recent profitability and maintained a valuation allowance against most U.S. deferred tax assets. A future reversal could create a non-recurring, non-cash tax benefit, but timing is uncertain.
- Management reported no pending litigation expected to have a material adverse effect and no off-balance-sheet arrangements. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective at the reasonable-assurance level.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether strong systems growth and the shift toward All Platform offerings can continue, and whether service revenue can expand beyond its small share of sales.
- Whether component availability and logistics improve, and how supply constraints, air freight, and supplier pricing affect delivery volumes and gross margins.
- Whether the inventory build and $165.8 million of purchase commitments remain aligned with demand, including potential excess or obsolete inventory exposure.
- Whether operating cash generation remains positive as receivables, inventory, supplier advances, and other working-capital needs change.
- How employee equity issuance and stock-based compensation affect dilution; weighted-average diluted shares were 67.6 million in Q2 versus 57.3 million in the year-ago quarter.
