Revenue in 2011 was $344.7 million, gross margin 35%, operating loss $52.3 million, and net loss $52.6 million. Despite improved results, Calix remained unprofitable and reported an accumulated deficit of $509.8 million.

Fourth quarter: Revenue was $94.0 million, down from $103.6 million in the third quarter but up from $91.4 million in fourth-quarter 2012. Gross profit was $40.0 million; operating loss was $8.1 million and net loss was $6.5 million. Fourth-quarter 2013 net loss included a $1.7 million gain from use of an Ericsson inventory credit.

Liquidity, cash flow, and debt

  • Year-end cash and cash equivalents were $82.7 million, versus $47.0 million a year earlier; working capital was $114.4 million.
  • Cash from operations was $40.8 million; investing used $7.0 million, primarily for capital expenditures; financing provided $1.8 million. Cash increased by $35.8 million during the year.
  • No borrowings were outstanding under the $50 million revolving credit facility at year-end, and the full amount was available. The facility matures in July 2016, is secured by substantially all company assets, and has financial covenants with which Calix reported compliance.
  • Deferred revenue was $53.3 million, including extended warranties and contracts—particularly certain RUS-funded projects—recognized as revenue only after service delivery or formal acceptance.

Changes, outlook, and material considerations

  • 2013 revenue growth reflected higher shipments to existing and new customers, international expansion, and recognition of revenue from RUS-funded projects. The Ericsson fiber-access acquisition also contributed; management expected its positive revenue impact to continue in 2014 and beyond.
  • Gross-margin improvement reflected product mix, including more higher-margin E-Series shipments, and cost reductions. Research and development expense rose 19% to $79.3 million; management said it would continue investing in product development. It expected operating expenses to rise in absolute dollars but decline as a percentage of revenue over time.
  • Calix said fourth-quarter growth slowed because customers had spent more than usual in the first three quarters and had less budget remaining. CSP spending is cyclical and can change with economic conditions, regulation, and government funding; management did not provide specific 2014 financial guidance.
  • Customer concentration is significant: CenturyLink accounted for 26% of 2013 revenue, compared with 21% in 2012 and 20% in 2011. Sales outside the U.S. rose to approximately 13% of revenue from 7% in 2012.
  • Key risks include customer and spending concentration, long and unpredictable sales cycles, competitive pricing, uncertain adoption of new products, dependence on Flextronics and limited-source components, inventory and warranty exposure, government-program and revenue-recognition timing, and execution risks in international expansion.
  • A class action related to the 2011 Occam acquisition remained pending. Defendants’ summary-judgment motion was awaiting a decision; if the case was not dismissed, trial was considered possible in 2014. Calix disputed the allegations and said it would defend the action. Potential indemnification obligations to former Occam directors and officers may apply; the filing does not state a clear quantified exposure.
  • Calix reported no goodwill or intangible-asset impairment in 2013. Ernst & Young issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal control over financial reporting; management also concluded controls were effective.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether CSP demand, especially CenturyLink orders, supports continued revenue growth after the fourth-quarter slowdown.
  • How much deferred revenue converts to recognized revenue, and the timing and acceptance conditions of RUS-funded projects.
  • Whether the 45% gross margin is sustainable given product mix, pricing competition, inventory charges, and warranty costs.
  • Progress in international sales and integration of the Ericsson portfolio, including the reseller relationship and expected 2014 contribution.
  • Developments and any potential financial effect of the Occam-related litigation, and continued availability and covenant capacity of the credit facility.
