- Quarterly revenue increased 19.3%; product revenue grew 23.1%, while services revenue rose 4.3%. Networking Platforms revenue increased 24.6% and represented 80.8% of revenue.
- Quarterly operating margin was approximately 9.1%, versus 6.2% a year earlier. Gross margin improved 0.8 percentage points in Q2, but declined 0.7 points for the six-month period.
- For the six months, operating cash flow was negative $35.8 million, compared with positive $52.1 million a year earlier. Capital expenditures were $58.0 million; operating cash flow less capital expenditures was therefore approximately negative $93.9 million.
- At April 29, cash and cash equivalents were $1,167.7 million and investments were $175.7 million, totaling $1,343.4 million. Carrying value of debt was approximately $1,558.3 million, including $11.9 million current; no ABL borrowings were outstanding.
- Current assets were $3,868.6 million and current liabilities were $1,057.9 million. Inventory was $1,098.1 million, up from $946.7 million at fiscal year-end.
Changes and notable items
- Revenue growth was led by Networking Platforms, particularly Converged Packet Optical. APAC revenue rose 59.6% in Q2; Americas rose 13.3% and EMEA 19.5%.
- Services profitability weakened: six-month services gross margin fell to 45.9% from 50.3%, reflecting lower maintenance revenue, lower-margin installation projects, and losses on certain Blue Planet software services projects.
- Operating expenses increased 12.1% in Q2, including higher R&D and personnel-related costs. Interest expense nearly doubled year over year, reflecting higher rates and additional debt.
- Six-month net income included a $26.5 million gain from remeasuring Ciena’s previously held Tibit investment following the acquisition. Ciena acquired Benu and Tibit for aggregate consideration of approximately $291.7 million; reported acquisition revenue and earnings were immaterial.
- The effective tax rate increased, primarily because of mandatory capitalization of research and development expenses.
Outlook, risks, and contingencies
- Management expects order volumes and backlog to continue moderating as supply conditions improve and customers place fewer advance orders. Certain customers deferred deliveries, in some cases until after fiscal 2023. Management cautions that backlog is not a reliable predictor of revenue timing.
- Management expects supply-chain challenges, extended lead times, and elevated costs to persist at least through fiscal 2023. It also expects lower-margin product mix and supply-related costs to pressure gross margin during the remainder of the year. The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance.
- Supply constraints and advance purchasing have tied up cash: inventory reached $1.1 billion, and outstanding purchase-order commitments for inventory were $2.2 billion. Management identifies excess and obsolete inventory, customer deferrals or cancellations, and supplier disruption as risks.
- Remaining performance obligations were $2.4 billion at quarter-end; Ciena expected approximately 86% to be recognized within 12 months. This measure consists of non-cancelable orders and is not equivalent to a revenue forecast.
- Ciena says available cash, investments, operating cash generation, and other liquidity sources should meet anticipated needs for the next 12 months and foreseeable future. Its $300 million ABL facility matures September 28, 2025; $89.7 million of letters of credit were supported by the facility.
- Debt includes a $672.2 million 2025 term loan, a $500 million 2030 term loan, and $400 million of 4.00% senior notes due 2030. The term loans have floating-rate exposure, partly hedged by interest-rate swaps; debt covenants restrict certain actions.
- Management does not expect ordinary-course tax matters or legal proceedings to have a material effect. Disclosure controls were deemed effective, and no material change in internal control was reported.
Investor verification points
- Track whether customer delivery deferrals and moderating orders reduce backlog and revenue growth as management expects.
- Monitor inventory, the $2.2 billion of supplier purchase commitments, inventory turns, and obsolescence provisions as supply availability changes.
- Assess whether cash conversion improves after negative six-month operating cash flow and higher receivables and inventory.
- Check gross-margin recovery or further pressure, especially in services and lower-margin product mix.
- Review debt service costs, floating-rate exposure, and the impact of the 2030 term loan on liquidity.
- Consider customer concentration: a web-scale provider exceeded 10% of Q2 revenue, while AT&T and that provider each exceeded 10% of six-month revenue.
